Dr. Carl Gombert

Associate Professor of Art

Bio: Dr. Gombert was born in Brimfield, Ohio in 1959. He started taking painting lessons at the age of fourteen with money he earned delivering newspapers. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Akron, cum laude, and a master’s degree in fine arts from Kent State University. Gombert spent a brief, though happy, period working as a stagehand and stage manager before pursuing and earning a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in fine arts with a specialty in art history and museum science. He has also studied at the School of Creative Design and Madison Art School where he completed a summer program in painting.

At Maryville, Dr. Gombert is Associate Professor of Art, instructing classes in painting, drawing, art history, ethics and coordinating interdisciplinary seminars.

Gombert’s work has been exhibited widely, winning numerous awards. His paintings are in many public collections including the Cleveland Indians, the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, the Avampato Museum (Charleston, WV), the Knoxville Convention Center, the Blount County Library, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Pastel Society of America. In late spring 2004, Gombert will mount a large solo exhibition at the Gwinnett County Historic Courthouse outside Atlanta.
