Project Lead

Bringing Together Leaders of Today and Tomorrow

Project Lead is a program for children and adult mentors, designed to enhance leadership skills including one’s sense of identity, peacekeeping skills, communication, and appreciation for diversity.

By bringing two generations together, to learn with and from each other, Maryville College students are given the opportunity to apply theories learned in the classroom to real-life situations and experiences.

Who is Involved?

  • Youth—3rd/4th graders and 6th/7th graders from Maryville, Alcoa, and Blount County Schools and those homeschooled in Blount County
  • Adult Mentors—adults living in the local community work with the 6th/7th graders
  • MC Students—students studying or involved in child development, psychology of adolescence, American Sign Language, group facilitation, and Mountain Challenge
  • Student Supervisors—MC students who have demonstrated leadership skills
  • Faculty Supervisors—Associate Professors of Psychology, Dr. Kathie Shiba and Dr. Ariane Schratter, Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Karen Beale

What do participants in Project Lead learn?

Identity – using art, participants explore various aspects of their roles and self-identity

Communication -- using American Sign Language, participants enhance their ability to communicate through verbal and non-verbal language

Peace-keeping – using active methods, participants explore ways to manage conflict and enhance cooperation

Diversity – with the help of international students, participants practice new ways of thinking and perceiving

Mountain Challenge – through physical movement and team-building exercises, participants practice leadership skills
