Application Requirements for International Students

International students may apply online or download a printable application. We do not have a deadline for applications, but recommend that you complete the application process at least 3 months before you wish to begin, in order to have enough time to get the forms processed, to get your student visa, and make final travel arrangements.

We have an easy, two-step application process:

  1. You will need to send:
    • Application form (online or paper)
    • Copy of your passport (identification page)
    • $25 application fee (see notes below about payment methods)
    • Official copies of high school/university records in English (and standard test results, if your country has a national examination system). We may also ask you to send your records to an outside education credentials evaluator.
    • OPTIONAL: English proficiency test results (TOEFL or IELTS), these are not required but recommended if available. See notes below about scores and about conditional admission if you have not taken an English proficiency test.
    • An essay explaining your reasons for choosing Maryville College. If you are also applying for an international student scholarship, add an explanation of your financial situation in which you discuss your financial need and how you intend to pay for your college studies.
  2. If you are accepted, we will send you our acceptance letter. To secure your place and receive the I-20 form which you need for your student visa application at the U.S. Embassy or consulate, you will need to send us financial documents (e.g., bank statements) showing you have the funding needed for your first year of study, and a $200 tuition deposit.

Financial documentation (bank statements, letters from employers, etc.) is required by the U.S. government. The documentation needs to show that you have the ability to pay for at least one full year of study and living costs here at Maryville. Even with our highest scholarships, the total cost per year will be at least $19,000. You may send us copies and keep the originals for your visa appointment. The tuition deposit of $200 is applied toward your first semester's tuition. It will be refunded if you cannot get a student visa, or if you return the unused I-20 and inform us that you will not attend.

You may choose to send us all items (application, $25 application fee, school records, essay, $200 deposit, financial documents) at the same time, to speed the process.

Notes:

  • The application fee may be paid by bank check (on a US-based bank), traveler’s checks, or by sending credit card information (type of card, name on card, number, and expiration date). For some countries we do not accept credit cards. For further information about sending this fee, contact us (international@maryvillecollege.edu).
  • We do not require SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS or other standardized tests. However, the English proficiency tests (TOEFL or IELTS) are recommended, to help us and to help you know your language ability. If you do not have English proficiency test scores, or your scores are lower than required, you can still apply for conditional admission. You will be tested upon arrival at Maryville College and placed into appropriate classes depending on your scores here. Students who pass the proficiency exam can begin taking college-level courses, and students who need more English training will be enrolled in the Intensive English (CELL) program. You may get college credit for your CELL studies.
  • A TOEFL score of 74 on the IBT (with no sub score below 18), 200 (CBT), an IELTS band score of 6.0 or an EIKEN (STEP) score of Grade Pre-1 will verify that you are proficient enough in English to begin College classes immediately upon arrival without the need to enter our intensive English program. A paper-based TOEFL result (above 525) combined with demonstrated competency in essay writing will also verify proficiency for university study.
  • ALL new students are given an English proficiency test when they begin studies here; any student without the required scores who does not pass our English proficiency exam may be placed initially into our intensive English program (CELL). Those students can begin taking College courses once they have passed the proficiency exam given each semester.
