Clothing
Because of the seasonal variation in the climate, it is important to bring clothing that will be suitable for you during your stay here.
The Maryville area does have four distinct seasons, with three equal months of winter, spring, summer and fall weather. If you are here for an academic year (August to May) you will experience very HOT weather (August, September, April, May) and very COLD weather (January, February). The temperature ranges from 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit (27-35 Celsius) in August to 20-40 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 – 5 C) in February. Winters are usually mild, even though an occasional ice or snow storm may occur. We suggest that you come equipped with SOME clothing for each season that you will experience here, but don’t try to bring EVERYTHING. You can find clothing here at very reasonable costs, so it’s better to come here with a variety of clothing, then buy other items that you may need, once you are here.
There is no official dress code at Maryville College. Many men and women, even professors teaching classes, choose to wear jeans and casual shirts or t-shirts. You should bring at least one formal outfit for interviews and formal occasions.
Driving
If you plan on driving a car while in the U.S., you must have a state driver’s license or certificate. You may legally drive in the U.S. with an International Driver’s License for no more than ninety (90) days. You can receive more information on driving in Tennessee after your arrival.
Voltage
Voltage in the U.S. is 110V which is different from other countries. Electrical items such as hair dryers, shavers, etc., brought from home will need an adapter. It is possible to buy them in the U.S.
Computers
If you bring a computer, each dorm room has internet access. You will also have access to computers (with internet access) in our computer labs. You should plan to use either the Maryville College network system (your email address would be firstname.lastname@maryvillecollege.edu) or to set up a web-based e-mail account such as a hotmail or yahoo e-mail account, which you can use on any computer.
