Thanks to a donation from the Denso Corporation, the Maryville College Learning Center is able to provide academic support services for Maryville College students. The academic resources provided through the Maryville College Denso Learning Center are designed to provide skills and strategies to help students become independent and active learners and to achieve academic success.
The Learning Center provides learning strategies and consultations to small groups or individuals throughout the semester focusing on learning styles, textbook strategies, note-taking skills, test preparation and test-taking strategies. Workshops also include areas of academic goal setting, organization, and time management. Students can also request appointments with the Learning Center staff for additional individual help.
The peer-tutoring program is designed to provide a collaborative approach to learning and additional opportunities to enhance learning experiences. Tutoring may be provided in small study groups, through regularly scheduled help sessions, or on an individual basis. All tutor sessions are provided free of charge to Maryville College students.
Students with disabilities may register for academic accommodations tailored to meet their individual needs based on their specific disabilities. Presently, the academic accommodations provided by the Learning Center include but are not limited to: testing services for students needing accommodations for classroom exams; interpreting and transcribing services for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing; texts on tape and/or readers for students who are blind and visually impaired as well as for individuals who have learning disabilities; priority registration services; library and laboratory assistance, note-taking services, and access to adaptive technologies. Please contact the Disability Services in the Learning Center at 865.981.8124 to schedule an appointment to review documentation of the specific disability and arrange accommodations for classes. You may also download Disability Services forms and submit an online request for accommodations in the Learning Center section of Student Services.
The Denso Learning Center provides additional support services to: students with disabilities, students who are academically at-risk upon initial entry to the College, and students on academic probation.
New students who are considered academically at-risk at the time of their admission to Maryville College also receive support services. Students attend weekly workshops, which include specific learning strategies, study sessions, and course tutorials. Students also receive individual academic advising and monitoring throughout their first year at the College.
Students placed on academic probation receive additional academic support. Students placed on academic probation for the first time are automatically enrolled in Effective Learning Strategies, a one-hour credit course. The course begins with an individual assessment of each student’s academic needs. Individual and group academic support is provided for enrolled students through weekly meetings. Participation in the weekly meetings offers encouragement for building effective learning strategies and practical life-skills needed to succeed at the college and professional level. Topics covered include individual learning styles, textbook reading strategies, note-taking skills, test preparation and test strategies, test anxiety, overcoming procrastination, defeating stress, and building motivation and time management success strategies.
To register for services, please visit the office at 204 Bartlett Hall Monday through Friday from 8am - 5pm or contact the center at 865.981.8124.
The Maryville College Writing Center provides a place where students can improve their writing skills, by practicing the skills necessary to become effective independent thinkers and writers. Peer tutors provide individual consultations on writing issues. Peer tutors provide academic guidance and support based on their own experiences as writers and teachers of writing. The writing center tutors effectively analyze each student’s writing, ask appropriate questions for clarification, offer opportunities for practice and provide encouragement and support.
The Writing Center is open from 6:30- 10:30. We are located in the Library Conference Room.
The Writing Center Director is Scott L. Steele. He can be contacted at 981-8077 or at scott.steele@maryvillecollege.edu
