Maintaining Financial Aid while Enrolled

To be considered eligible to receive financial assistance at Maryville College, a student must be enrolled on at least a ½-time basis (6 credit hours per term) and progressing cumulatively and academically toward an educational objective.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Receiving Financial Aid

Cumulative Progress:

A student must be making cumulative progress toward a degree within the following maximum time frame:

Academic Years Completed Number of Credit Hours Successfully Completed
1 20
2 40
3 60
4 80
5 100
6 128

Evaluation of cumulative is determined on an annual basis. Prorated adjustments will be made for students enrolled less than full-time. (e.g., ¾ -time = 9 years; ½-time = 12 years)

Transfer students will be subject to the above time frame concerning satisfactory completion of courses. Enrollment at a previous institution is considered in regard to the maximum allowable time frame for graduation.

Academic Probation:

Students earning a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0, or a C average, are placed on academic probation and, consequently, financial aid probation. A student is considered to be making satisfactory academic progress for retention and financial aid purposes if the following minimum GPA standards are maintained in relation to credit hours completed:

Credit Hours Attempted Academic & Financial Aid Suspension
0 – 32 1.00
33 – 64 1.60
65 – 96 1.92
97 – 128 below 2.00

* Students falling below this standard will NOT be considered to be making satisfactory progress, and therefore, will NOT be eligible to receive Title IV Federal Aid (i.e., Pell Grant, S.E.O.G., Stafford Loans, etc.), State Financial Aid or Institutional Financial Aid.

** Please note Academic Scholarships require a higher GPA to renew.

Repeated Courses / Withdrawals / Incompletes

Repeated courses are included in the requirements of cumulative progress. Financial assistance will be extended to repeat a course one time only. Withdrawals and incompletes are taken into consideration in the maximum time frame.

Terminations

Failure to meet the cumulative progress standard (time frame) or the academic minimum for satisfactory academic progress will result in the termination of the student’s eligibility to receive Title IV financial aid, State financial assistance and institutional aid.

Appeals

Students removed from financial aid can appeal that decision. Appeals regarding the time frame criterion must be made, in writing, to the Director of Financial Aid. A committee will review the appeal. Reasons for appeal may include, but are not limited to, death in the family, illness, or other extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student. If reinstated, a student will be allowed one semester to attain cumulative progress minimum standards.

As noted, it is possible for one to be subject to financial aid suspension without being subject to suspension from the College. Appeals concerning academic suspension must be made in writing to the Committee on Admission and Standing.
