Founded in 1819 and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, USA, Maryville College combines a regionally and nationally ranked liberal arts education with an array of competitive NCAA Division III athletic teams.
Intercollegiate athletics have been an important part of the Maryville College Campus for over 130 years, when MC fielded their first baseball team in 1876.
Today the Scots sponsor 12 NCAA sanctioned sports, plus varsity cheerleading. They have been a member of the NCAA since 1969 and compete on the Division III level. Maryville’s affiliation within the NCAA Division III reflects the philosophy that athletic participation is an important role in the overall liberal arts educational experience. Since the fall of 2000, Maryville has been an active member of the seven-member Great South Athletic Conference in all of their sports except football. The football team began competition in the USA South Athletic Conference in the fall of 2005.
MC fields men’s varsity teams in soccer, cross country, football, basketball, baseball, tennis and cheerleading. Maryville presently fields women’s teams in soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball and cheerleading.
Through the 2007-2008 playing season, Maryville has produced 58 All-Americans, 37 GSAC conference championships, and has qualified for 49 NCAA National tournaments.
The Scots have been very successful on the national tournament scene. The following teams have represented MC in the NCAA National tournament.
The Scots have won 37 Great South Athletic Conference championships since 2000, which is the best among all seven-member institutions.
In only seven seasons, Maryville has earned eight different GSAC Presidents’ Cups, which recognizes the league’s overall winning program.
At Maryville, athletics are an integral part of the total student life experience. Over 350 student-athlete, approximately 30% of MC’s student population, embrace the true scholar-athlete ideal, valuing the importance of competition while balancing it with the pursuit of excellence in the classroom.
