LaGrange, Ga. - The Great South Athletic Conference has awarded its 2008-2009 Presidents’ Cups with Maryville College sweeping both of the men's and women's cumulative honors. It is the fifth straight year Maryville has earned both awards.

The Maryville men garnered 480 points and finished 25 points ahead of runner-up Huntingdon to win the award for the sixth straight year. The Scots earned 100 points for winning the conference title in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and baseball while earning 90 points for finishing second in cross country and tennis.

The Maryville women claimed their fifth straight Presidents' Cup. The Lady Scots totaled 565 total points and finished 90 points ahead of runner-up Huntingdon. Maryville’s women won league championships in soccer, cross country, volleyball, and basketball. MC was second in softball and placed third in tennis.

Maryville and Piedmont are the only two member institutions to win GSAC Presidents’ Cups. Prior to the 2002-2003 athletic seasons, the Cup was awarded on a men’s and women’s combined point total with Piedmont and Maryville each winning one combined Cup.

The Presidents’ Cup, one for men one for women, is awarded annually to the Great South Athletic Conference schools that accumulate the highest points total in an academic year. This is based on order of finish in the championships. An institution that does not field a team in a conference championship will not be awarded points in that sport. Ties will divide equally the total number of points allotted for those two or more positions. Men’s and women’s teams were scored separately. The scoring structure is based on a pro-rated points system with the conference champion receiving 100 points, second place garnering 90 points, etcetera.

In only nine seasons, Maryville has earned 12 different GSAC Presidents’ Cups.

The Great South Athletic Conference is an athletic affiliation of seven NCAA Division-III member institutions in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. For complete coverage of the GSAC visit the official website of the conference at www.greatsouth.org.
