The Maryville College women’s soccer program opened up play in the Great South Conference Tournament on Friday when they hosted Salem College. The Scots scored two second half goals to pull away from the Spirits by a score of 3-0.
Maryville (12-4-1) got on the board in the fifth minute of play on a goal by Lauren Stuart. The tally was Stuart’s seventh of the season and the Scots took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Maryville took a two goal advantage when 2009 GSAC “Player of the Year” Jessica Petersen scored her 18th goal of the season. The Scots third and final goal came off the foot of freshman Olivia Herron, with the assist being credited to Jessica Thompson.
Desiree Simmons made five saves in 90 minutes of work to earn the shutout in goal.
The Scots return to action on Saturday afternoon when they play for the Great South Conference Tournament Championship. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
