Campbell tourney fitting memorial; Scots welcome top-flight field to town for inaugural event

James C. “Jimmy” Campbell was a fixture on the Blount County sporting scene for more than half a century. The Maryville College and Maryville High School icon has been sorely missed since his death last August. To help ensure his former coach and mentor is always remembered, Maryville College coach Randy Lambert is sending his Scots to the hardwood this weekend as hosts of the inaugural James C. Campbell Memorial Tournament at Boydson Baird Gymnasium. Former Division III national champion Wabash College and LaGrange (Ga.) College will tip things off Saturday at 5 p.m., with the Scots and the Webster University Gorlocks of St. Louis following at 7. Webster is under the direction of former Maryville assistant Chris Bunch.

Scots hold on to defeat No. 21 Colonels 72-70

The Maryville College Scots jumped out to an 18 point advantage but needed four key free throws down the stretch by sophomore Jordan Damron to seal a 72-70 victory over No. 21 ranked Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on Wednesday evening.

Translating potential: MC men's basketball carrying high hopes into season

If potential truly means you haven't proved anything yet, Maryville College's men's basketball team will have the chance to move from potential to proven very quickly this season. The Scots take on a host of possible NCAA tourney teams in the opening weeks. While the Internet has buzzed through the preseason with fan chatter of a team loaded for the Scots' first Final Four run, head coach Randy Lambert is a bit more realistic after 29 seasons.
