The men and women harriers of Maryville College will open their 2009-10 season with new faces and new team goals.
After a second place finish in last season's GSAC championship that thwarted a four year winning streak, the Scots men runners are ready for this season with a young group and fresh approach. Returning only two members of last year's team, the men will be captained by sophomore Mike Mahan, last year's stand out and best finisher for the Scots. Also, returning to the men's side will be Jonathan Salkeld. The duo of sophomores represent the eldest members of this young athletic squad who will also include William Blount High School stand out and freshman Travis Wilson, Michael Gunther, Owen Wilson, William Sconiers, and Winston Sullivan. Each are first year runners for the Scots.
According to forth year head coach Tyson Murphy "This will be a very different year for us as a team." We have two lead runners with a great deal of cross country experience and determination accompanied by a strong work ethic. We have 4-5 new runners with great room for improvement. Each new runner has everything to learn about pace, competition, and how to race. I have no doubt that we will see some record setting individual accomplishments on the men's side, but to see team success, everyone will have to step up and work hard. These guys have a lot to live up to in our conference." The Maryville Men hold conference championship titles for 2001,2005, 2006,2007, and a second place finish in 2008.
The women's team begins the season with a record breaking roster of 11 runners. The women also start the season with a legacy of winning to uphold. Team captain, and senior Katy Powell along with scorer and senior, Chelsea Barker return along with sophomores Rachel Bossard, and Rachel Harris to guide new runners. Nicole McNabb, Erin Cawthorn, Brandi Millsaps, Jennifer Brown, Meagan Attanasio, Natalie Bossard, and Colleen Meersman will contribute as freshmen to what will hopefully be another successful season in the GSAC. "We have never had this many women come out for cross country. It is a testament to our reputation as a team and institution,” says coach Murphy. “While we have lost some speed at the front in of the race, our numbers should allow us to run as a solid and steady pack." The Lady Scots have their own list of accolades related to conference titles finishing first in 2006 and 2008 while placing second in 2005 and 2007.
