Tony Ierulli concluded his ninth season at the helm of the Maryville College football team, finishing 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the USA South Athletic Conference. MC featured a three game win streak and finished 4th in the final league standings. This 1980 Maryville College graduate takes great pride in restoring the rich football heritage at his alma mater.
Ierulli has had tremendous success developing his players on the field and in the classroom. Over his first nine seasons, Ierulli and his staff have developed 77 All-USA South performers in only seven years of membership. 74 players were honored the last three seasons alone by the league as academic all-conference honorees. He placed a pair of players on the Capital One/CoSida Academic All-District team in 2011.
Ierulli, who has over 30 years of college coaching experience, was introduced as the 27th head coach in Maryville College's 119 year history in January of 2003.
A native of Sarasota, Fla., Ierulli graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1975. He was a member of the 1972 state championship football team and a first team All-State linebacker in 1973 and 1974.
Ierulli played baseball at Manatee Junior College (Bradenton, Fla.) in 1976 before transferring to Maryville College.
Ierulli played and started at linebacker during the most successful period in school history. The 1976-1979 Scots football teams posted an overall record of 28-7 and were ranked in the Top Twenty of the Division III polls each season. Ierulli had five career interceptions and was named captain for the 1979 squad.
Ierulli achieved much success on the baseball field for Maryville. He led the Scots in hitting with a .407 average in 1977 and a .384 average in 1979. Ierulli had four career grand slams with three coming in 1978. Ierulli hit a grand slam in each game of a double header against Tennessee Tech University and hit a third bases loaded home run later that season against the University of Tennessee. Ierulli captained the 1979 baseball team.
Following graduation, Ierulli was a graduate assistant football coach at Bowling Green University. He later advanced to take an assistant defensive line coaching position at the University of Missouri during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Coach Ierulli worked for three seasons (1983-1985) under Coach Terry Bowden at Salem College (W.Va.). As linebacker coach and eventually defensive coordinator, Ierulli's defenses were ranked within the NAIA's top ten both seasons while earning a pair of NAIA playoff appearances.
The 1986 and 1987 seasons saw Coach Ierulli working as a defensive coordinator under Coach Rocky Rees at Susquehanna University. His Crusaders finished the 1986 season with a 12-1 record and a semi-final appearance in the Division III playoffs.
Ierulli rejoined Bowden at Samford University (Ala.) in 1988 as linebacker coach and recruiting coordinator. His efforts helped the Bulldogs move from a Division III program in 1988 to Division I-AA playoff teams in 1991 and 1992.
Coach Ierulli connected once again with Rocky Rees in 1996 as defensive coordinator at Shippensburg University (Pa.). During his six year tenure, the Red Raiders posted five winning teams.
In January 2002, Ierulli was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year. The award was created to honor assistant coaches who excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success along with AFCA and professional organization involvement.
Throughout his career, Ierulli and his wife Carol have established a mentoring and tutoring program at local elementary schools. Begun when he was an assistant at Missouri, the Ierulli's have used football players as role models for the children in the community.
Ierulli's family ties run deep at Maryville College. Tony met his future wife, Carol, at Maryville and were married after their graduation in 1980. Carol's parents, Eldria and Etta Hurst, are former long-time employees of Maryville. Tony's brother, David, attended MC and played on the same baseball team with Tony during the 1978-1979 seasons. Finally, Tony and Carol's son, Anthony (A.J.) played for the Scots baseball team during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
The Ierulli family baseball ties continue with Tony's cousin Joe Garardi, who presently serves as the manager of the New York Yankees.
The Ierulli's have three children: A.J. is a graduate of Shippensburg University. Katie graduated from Maryville in 2007. Their youngest daughter, Kelli, excelled in golf as a Scot and graduated in 2010.
