After only two seasons of inter-collegiate golf competition, the Maryville College Men’s Golf Team has set some records that future teams will be compared to. During the 2010-11 season, the Scots posted two team titles, including the “GSAC Conference Championship”.
The Scots captured the first victory in school history in the fall of 2010 by winning the “Piedmont Fall Invitational” with scores of 293-310=603. Then in the spring of 2011, the team returned to Piedmont to compete in the inaugural GSAC Conference Championship Tournament. An opening round of 297 found the Scots with the overnight lead, 5 strokes ahead of number 7 ranked Huntingdon College. After a slow start in round two the Scots rebounded, when the final three Scots birdied the 18th hole for a closing round 305, just enough to hold on for a one shot victory over hard charging LaGrange College.
In 2010-11, individually, Greer SC Senior Trey Bridwell won two titles, raising his career win total to four. Trey set school, tournament and course records during the Jekyll Island Invitational in March with an 8 under par round of 64 on day two of the 54 hole event which enabled him to finish in 2nd place in an event that boasted the most prestigious Division III field of the season.
At season’s end Bridwell became the first Maryville player ever to be selected to compete in the “NCAA Division III National Championship” where he finished 14th. Trey was also named to the “All GSAC Team” the “Ping All South-East Regional Team” and was a “Ping 2nd Team All American.”
Fellow Senior Jeremy Cason of Jefferson City, TN posted an Individual victory in the season opening “Jim English Invitational.” Cason was also co-champion of the “2009 Piedmont Fall Invitational.” During his career at Maryville, Jeremy was named to All Tournament teams on six different occasions.
Sparta, TN Sophomore J.T. Randolph was named to the 2011 “All GSAC Team” after a career best 3rd place finish in the “GSAC Championship.” Norway’s Joey Leegaard was named to the “All GSAC Academic Team” and Ohio Freshman Eric Hall was a member of the “All GSAC Sportsmanship Team.”
Coach Ron Waters had this to say about the 2010-11 team. “When Trey and Jeremy decided to transferred in to help us start the program in 2009, I had a two year plan. I wanted to play against the best Division III competition in the nation and I wanted those seniors to leave here with great memories. Finishing off the season by winning the GSAC Championship was a special way to send those players off after graduation. Hopefully returning players and incoming freshmen will be hungry to match the accomplishments of the 2011 team.”
Coach Waters, the 2010-11 GSAC Coach of the Year, is looking forward to the start of the 2011-12 season and is hoping that this years team will pick up right where last years team left off.
