The Maryville College women’s soccer program returned to the home pitch on Monday to continue the 2010 Nike Kick-off Classic against the visitors from Birmingham Southern.  The Scots and Panthers battled for 90 minutes but it took several minutes in overtime for Maryville to win 2-1.

The Panthers got on the board in the 5th minute of the game when Sara Menton flipped the ball over the Maryville keeper.  The goal was the lone tally of the first half and the Scots trailed 1-0 at intermission.

Maryville (1-1) tied the game in the 62nd minute when freshman Ashley Howarth redirected a Jessica Petersen pass into the back of the net.  The goal was Howarth’s first of her career and the first goal for the Scots this season.

The score remained tied at the end of regulation, sending the match into a sudden death overtime period.  Yet, the Scots wasted little time to declare a winner as Howarth struck again with her second goal of the game.  The play was once again setup by Jessica Petersen and the Scots took home their first win of the 2010 campaign.

The Scots return to action next weekend when they travel to Virginia to take part in the Lynchburg College Tournament.  Maryville is scheduled to play Roanoke College (VA) on Saturday at 6:30 pm.
