Call for papers

On October 14-15, 2011, Maryville College will host the Twenty-Third Annual Meeting of the Southeast World History Association (SEWHA), a regional affiliate of the World History Association.  The conference will center around two major themes: "Decline & Fall" and "Teaching World History in the Age of Wikipedia."  Panel and individual paper proposals concerning these or any other aspect of world history, broadly defined, are welcomed.  In addition to traditional panel and individual paper proposals, we accept and encourage proposals for nontraditional formats such as roundtables, information sessions, interactive media, etc.

The new deadline for submissions is Friday, September 2, 2011.

Proposals are welcome from scholars, educators, and students of world history at all levels and should not exceed 250 words.  Please include contact information and affiliation for each presenter.  For panel proposals, please be sure to include a short panel abstract as well as abstracts for individual papers.  Submit proposals electronically to doug.sofer@maryvillecollege.edu or in hard copy to Dr. Doug Sofer / Maryville College / 502 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway / Maryville, Tennessee 37804.

Keynote address & world history workshop by Merry Wiesner-Hanks

The conference organizers are proud to feature two presentations by historian Merry Wiesner-Hanks from the University of Wisconsin: Milwaukee.  Wiesner-Hanks is a prolific researcher on world and comparative history, on the history of Early Modern Europe, and on women and gender.  Pedagogically, she is an expert on teaching world history and has authored several textbooks and primary document readers on this subject.  She is also a Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement World History Examination.

The keynote address, "Sowers of Discord, Agents of Decline: Demons in World History," is about how studying demons can help us to understand cultural connections, encounters across space and time, questions of gender and other critical aspects of world history.

Dr. Wiesner-Hanks’ pedagogical workshop, "Teaching Religion in World History: Comparisons and Connections," is geared to teachers of world history at both the secondary and collegiate levels.

High school student poster presentation

This conference provides a rare opportunity for high school students to showcase their historical research at this professional history conference.  Students will present their posters to an audience of historians, history educators and other history enthusiasts who will be in attendance.  Prizes will be offered to the best posters, as judged by a panel of historians.

For additional information, please email Doug Sofer.
