Maryville College String Camp

Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 8
Concert Friday June 8, 2:30 PM

The Maryville College String Camp provides an opportunity for campers to explore the excitement of orchestra playing during the summer off-season, while continuing the development of their technique and musical skills. Students attending the camp will be placed in one of three ensembles geared toward beginning through advanced string playing levels. Beginning to intermediate players will be placed in the Amati or Stradivari ensembles, based on orchestra experience and/or a recommendation from a private instructor. Advanced players will audition on the first day of camp for the Paganini Ensemble which will engage students in higher level repertoire. All three ensembles provide a fun and educational outlet in a non-competitive setting, that teaches and inspires students. Throughout the week campers will participate in a string orchestra as well as an individual instrument ensemble (violin, viola, and cello choirs) led by our conductors and counselors. Every day campers will also attend the string workshop, where different musical topics are explored ranging from sight-reading to improvisation. Final performances will take place on Friday, June 8, at 2:30PM at the Clayton Performing Arts Center for parents and friends to enjoy free of charge.

We will form three ensembles:

Amati Orchestra :

Recommended for students with a basic setup on the instrument plus note reading/ rhythmical skills.  This will apply to most students with one year of orchestra experience (incoming 6th grade orchestra students), as well as string players who are currently taking lessons but have not played in an ensemble (homeschoolers, students who do not have the option to take orchestra at their school, or incoming 5th graders who are not old enough take orchestra yet). Average age 10-11.

Stradivari Orchestra :

This ensemble is recommended for students with two or more years of orchestra experience (incoming 7th graders and middle school students). Students should be comfortable with note reading and rhythmical skills. Average age 12 and up.

Paganini Orchestra :

This audition based ensemble is for advanced players with a recommended performing experience of four or more years. This will apply to most students who are studying with a private instructor, as the high level of repertoire requires students to have ease in shifting, vibrato, controlled variations in bow stroke, and a mature sound. Average age 14-18.
