Mentoring students at community center

Ayesha Turner responds to the call to serve, just as she has for years and is satisfied to know she is impacting young lives.

A junior Sign Language interpreting major and music minor at Maryville College, Turner is a Bonner Scholar who volunteers at least 40 hours a month in exchange for substantial scholarship dollars to apply toward tuition and books. The 20-year-old Powder Springs, Ga., native was drawn to the beautiful campus, the benefits of a small, private college and the opportunity to continue her service work.

Making a difference among special-needs adults

At first, Elizabeth Dunn wondered how in the world she could fit community service into her college schedule.

Now she wonders how in the world she could have ignored her volunteer spirit.

Dunn, a first-year student at Maryville College, is a Bonner Scholar. In exchange for scholarship dollars, she volunteers at least 40 hours monthly at the Gateway to Independence, a local non-profit agency whose mission is to help young adults with disabilities to achieve independence by providing them with vocational training and social activities.

Courtney, a 19-year-old sophomore at Maryville College, hails from Knoxville, Tenn. He is a Bonner Scholar who volunteers at least 40 hours per month in exchange for scholarship monies to apply toward tuition and books.

Mentoring potential first-generation college students

It all started two years ago with an essay written for a freshman composition class about a student’s experiences as the first person in his family to attend college. The paper blossomed into a service opportunity through a new campus organization.

That essay was written by Ransford Sarfo, a 21-year-old political science major from Villa Rica, Ga. Originally from the West African country of Ghana, Sarfo first came to Maryville College for Minority Recruitment Weekend where he fell in love with the people, as well as the campus.

MC Bonner Scholar tutors adult learners

The front seat of Elizabeth Newman’s car holds many “basics” for a 19-year-old college student: textbooks, ink pens, a purse and cell phone. But unlike her peers, Newman also drives around with a Shoney’s menu within reach.

Newman is not a waitress; she is a tutor for the English as a Second Language (ESL) students in the Blount County Adult Education Program. And the menu is a practical teaching tool.
