Planning Your Gifts for Tomorrow

What is Planned Giving?

Sue ’53 and David Grubbs ‘53

Planned giving is the process of thoughtfully structuring a significant gift by choosing the best asset(s) and making the gift in the most economical, tax-advantaged fashion. Assets used to fund planned gifts may include securities, life insurance, real estate, collectibles, or any valuable asset. Planned gifts are future-oriented, and highly-appreciated assets usually produce the best advantages for the donor. Planned gifts provide opportunities to coordinate financial goals with charitable goals, thus leveraging the tax benefits of charitable giving. The Society of 1819 recognizes friends an alumni who have made a planned gift to Maryville College.

Why is Planned Giving important to Maryville College?

  • MC general endowment is comprised of many separate named funds permanently established through planned gifts.
  • Scholarships and financial aid are the largest beneficiaries of endowment and planned gifts.
  • Provides a safety net for lean times - in years when the College has faced daunting financial circumstances, planned gifts have helped to keep MC afloat.
  • Provides a competitive edge in times of prosperity. Funds for faculty/staff education and training and equipment purchases.
  • Produces institutional continuity. The beliefs and values which have defined MC through the generations are effectively passed down through the wishes donors have expressed through their endowment gifts.

Planned Gifts:

  • May come from assets rather than discretionary income
  • Unlock appreciation of low-yielding assets
  • Bypass capital gains tax
  • Produce current income tax deduction
  • Increase income
  • Reduce or eliminate estate taxes
  • Preserve your estate for family and other heirs
  • Provide a legacy that will carry on the values you have cherished
  • Allow membership in the Society of 1819 - MC's honorary society for those who have included Maryville College in their estate plans
