Resources For Parents & Guardians

We are aware that helping your son or daughter plan for a successful study abroad experience is an important element of the actual experience. For many students, the decision to study abroad reflects a desire for independence, maturity, growing up, and intellectual challenge. Their ability to make informed decisions is very important. Parents are great resources in this maturing process by listening, asking questions, supporting their decisions as well as knowing how to welcome the students back from their abroad experiences.
The Center for International Education communicates primarily directly to students, and expects that students will take the responsibility to bring relevant information home to parents.
That being said, we would like to provide some resources that may be useful to you as you help your student prepare for their sojourn abroad.
Most information we share with students prior to departure is available on our website including:

Policies & Procedures

Study abroad students are held to the same standards of conduct found in the Maryville College Student Handbook and all students are required to sign a conduct form for study abroad students and a medical/liability release.

In addition, students abroad are held to standards of conduct set by the host institution, program provider and host country. Students are expected to follow guidelines about culturally appropriate conduct and should confer with on-site staff about local practices.

The host institution or program provider program may, at their discretion, impose disciplinary measures or dismissal from the program if a student’s behavior is found to be damaging to the program, institution, student him/herself or other students. In the case of dismissal, determinations on credits, grades and finances will be made by Academic Affairs in consultation with the overseas program.
