Maryville College senior Anna Glass received an honorable mention for a photo she submitted to Photographer’s Forum magazine’s 31st annual “Best of College Photography” contest.
The photo, titled “Rosemary,” depicts a close-up of a chicken looking straight at the camera. Glass took the photo in spring 2010, when she was visiting her sister in Albany, Ore. Her sister had three pet chickens at the time, including one named Rosemary.
“Rosemary had jumped on top of the homemade chicken coop so she was eye level with me,” recalled Glass, who is an art major. “Chickens have very jerky head movements, so when I pointed the camera at her, I didn’t think she was even looking my way. When I looked at the image, it turns out that she had snapped her head straight toward mine. I instantly fell in love with the image.”
Glass submitted the photo to Photographer’s Forum in order to meet a class requirement to submit artwork to a juried art competition.
When she learned that the photo had received an honorable mention, she admits that she didn’t initially think it was a big deal.
“At first, I was under the impression that there were thousands of ‘honorable mentions,’ and then I realized I was one out of 100,” Glass said. “When I saw the numbers, I felt really sheepish and proud about it. Now I am pretty excited!”
The photo will be printed in the magazine, as well as the hardcover book Best of College Photography 2011, which will be released in June. She said this was the first time she has submitted her photos to the magazine, but “it won’t be the last.” The publication has requested that she submit a portfolio for possible publication, she said.
Glass said she liked the photo so much that she painted the image in a 30”x40” vertical format in oil paints. The painting, along with several other large oil paintings of pets, will be on display during Glass’s Senior Art Show, which opens May 5 with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Blackberry Farms Gallery. The exhibit closes with a closing reception at 6 p.m. on May 14 in the gallery. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
