To help raise funds for the local Meals on Wheels program, Maryville College has partnered with the Blount County Community Action Agency to bring the internationally-acclaimed Harlem Ambassadors to the area.
The Ambassadors offer a unique brand of Harlem-style basketball, featuring high-flying slam dunks, dazzling ball-handling tricks and hilarious comedy routines. Their match-up against the Mobile Meals Dribblers, a team composed of well-known community leaders, is set for 7 p.m., Feb. 1 in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium of Cooper Athletic Center.
The Ambassadors feature non-stop laughs and deliver a positive message for kids wherever the Ambassadors play. “At our shows, we want the kids to know that they’re part of our team too,” Coach Ladè Majic said. “We invite as many kids as we can to come sit on the bench, have a front row seat during the show, and get involved in all of the fun stuff we do.”
The Ambassadors set themselves apart from other “Harlem-style” basketball teams by working with local not-for-profit and service organizations and holding Harlem Ambassadors shows as community fundraising events.
The Senior Nutrition Program of Blount County Community Action Agency provides nutritious noon meals to homebound seniors along with those who are able to attend a congregate meal at one of four locations. There is a growing need for meals for seniors who are isolated, returning home from a hospital or rehab setting, or have no one to prepare meals for them. Meals on Wheels seek to meet the need of those seniors. However, this can only be done through the generosity of donations, fundraisers, recipient contributions, and Title III funding from the Area Agency on Aging & Disability.
“It feels good to be able to provide quality entertainment and create memories that the fans will take with them,” President Dale Moss explained.
Advance tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for students and senior citizens. Kids ages 4 and younger are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at all Capital Bank (formerly Green Bank) locations, the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, the Blount County Community Action Agency and Maryville College's Athletics Department Office (inside Cooper Athletic Center).
