The inaugural Maryville College K-20 Symposium, “Starting with the End in Mind: Education, STEM and Workforce Development,” will be held Nov. 8-9 on the Maryville College campus.
The symposium seeks to bring together representatives from the education and workforce development communities to share and discuss issues that address the changes taking place in education and workforce development. Attendees will engage in community forums and educational topic panels, as well as common core state standards and STEM education breakout sessions to learn about current trends, successes and challenges in education and business.
“The goal for public education in Tennessee is that graduates will be college ready or workforce ready,” said Dr. Terry Simpson, professor of secondary education and chair of the Division of Education at Maryville College. “This symposium will address that goal.”
Featured speakers include: Dr. Ronald Ferguson, creator of the Tripod Project for School Improvement, the faculty co-chair and director of the Achievement Gap Initiative (AGI) at Harvard University and faculty co-director of the Pathways to Prosperity Project; Dr. Christy Price, professor of psychology at Dalton State College who has won numerous awards as a result of her innovative strategies to help students achieve learning outcomes; and Ted W. Abernathy, Jr., executive director of the Southern Growth Policy Board whose 31-year economic development career has included work for cities, counties, regions and the private sector.
The symposium strand topics include: “College and Career Readiness,” which will focus on the need for postsecondary education and the skills, habits and attitudes needed for career readiness; “Education and Workforce Development,” which will focus on how K-20 educational institutions, workforce development, development districts, economic and community development and others can work collaboratively to reach common goals; “Current STEM Initiatives and Opportunities,” which will provide opportunities for attendees to learn about current and future STEM initiatives and opportunities; and “Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and STEM,” which will focus on information that will familiarize attendees with the CCSS while providing interactive, hands-on STEM lesson experiences and best practices.
The symposium is a capstone event for the East Tennessee Math Science Partnership (ETnMSP), a Tennessee Department of Education Math Science Partnership grant that was awarded to Maryville College in 2008. The ETnMSP focuses on effective, data-driven and sustainable mathematics and science improvements in teaching and learning in the public schools.
The event is open to the public with registration, and space is limited. The deadline for early bird registration is Oct. 15, and the cost is $150 for both days, $90 for Thursday only registration and $110 for Friday only. For those who register after Oct. 15, the cost is $170 for both days, $110 for Thursday only registration and $130 for Friday only. If space is available, onsite registration will be offered for $200 for both days, $130 for Thursday only and $150 for Friday only.
