The Maryville College Jazz Band will present its 2013 Fall Concert on Tues., Nov. 12 in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall.
The event, which starts at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Directed by Dr. Bill Swann, associate professor of music and chair of the Division of Fine Arts, the band will perform “Freedom Jazz Dance” by Eddie Harris; “Syeeda’s Song Flute” by John Coltrane; “Cousin Mary” by John Coltrane; “Equinox” by John Coltrane; “Long As You Know You’re Living Yours” by Keith Jarrett; “Tune Up” by Miles Davis; “Walk Tall” by Cannonball Adderly; and “Sugar” by Stanley Turrentine.
“We’re doing several things by John Coltrane this concert as we’ve not really done many of his compositions in the past,” Swann said. “Like Miles Davis, he was an innovator who was constantly challenging himself and his bandmates to push the boundaries of jazz in the 1960s.”
Jazz Band members are: Noah Cantrell, electric bass; Tyler Davis, electric bass; Chris Hickman, drumset; Eric Kearney, euphonium; Adam Loo, electric mandolin; Ashley Norwood, oboe; Sam Turpen, trombone; Carrie West, soprano saxophone; and Kacey Whitteaker, electric guitar.
