Inauguration news: Events announced for four-day celebration

Maryville College will inaugurate its 11th president, Dr. William T. “Tom” Bogart, during a ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Sat., April 16 in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre of the Clayton Center for the Arts.
And while much of the installation ceremony will be about – and conducted by – the newest leader of the 192-year-old college, events leading up to the historic event will highlight the distinctive programs and features of the liberal arts institution now attended by approximately 1,000 undergraduates.
“As the Inauguration Committee discussed the plans for this inauguration, we decided that in addition to the events being a celebration of Dr. Bogart as the new Maryville College president, we agreed that this should be also a celebration of the College – its rigorous academic opportunities, emphasis on a total learning experience, and its proud and distinguished history,” said Natalie Haslam, committee co-chairperson.
Co-chair Mark Ingram added: “In accepting the College’s offer to be its 11th president last year, Dr. Bogart conveyed his excitement and passion for those things that make Maryville College distinctive, so we thought it would be fitting to use this opportunity to show the region how Maryville College uniquely prepares students for lives of citizenship and leadership.”
Bogart began his term July 1, 2010, replacing Dr. Gerald Gibson, who retired after 17 years at the helm. Previously the dean of academic affairs and professor of economics at York College of Pennsylvania, Bogart holds doctoral and master’s degrees in economics from Princeton University. His bachelor’s degree is from Rice University.
Senior Studies presented
Special presentations and celebrations begin Wed., April 13 with a bagpipe welcome at 1:30 p.m. in the outdoor plaza of the Clayton Center for the Arts.
On each of the four days, student and piper Sam Newton ’13 will symbolically welcome the public to the day’s events with performances of Scottish tunes.
A short “sneak preview” of a new video package spotlighting the Maryville College of today will be held at 2 p.m. in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre of the Clayton Center. At 3 p.m. in the Haslam Family Flexible Theatre, students will perform one-act plays.
A symposium showcasing several exemplary Senior Studies is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in the Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center.
One of the distinctive features of a Maryville education, the Senior Study requirement calls for students to complete a two-semester research and writing project that is guided by a faculty supervisor. According to the College’s catalog, the Senior Study program “facilitates the scholarship of discovery within the major field and integrates those methods with the educational goals fostered through the Maryville Curriculum.”
Faith and learning commitment celebrated
Connected to the Presbyterian Church since its founding in 1819 by the Rev. Isaac Anderson, a Presbyterian minister of Ulster-Scot heritage, Maryville College has a voluntary covenant with the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s Synod of Living Waters.
A panel discussion entitled “Faith’s Role in Learning and the Maryville College Experience,” will get started at 1:30 p.m., April 14, in the Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center.
Panelists include Dr. Bill Meyer, professor of philosophy and chair of the College’s Faith and Learning Committee; the Rev. Anne D. McKee, campus minister and member of the Faith and Learning Committee; Dr. Peggy Cowan, professor of religion and member of the Faith and Learning Committee; and Dr. Gary Luhr, executive director of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Andrew Morriss, professor at the University of Alabama School of Law and a colleague and close friend of Bogart.
“Andy is a person of faith and scholarship who brings both to bear on important questions,” Bogart said. “His expertise and devotion to the environment make him a natural fit for the interests of our community.”
At 5:30 p.m., a community celebration of worship will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville.
Entitled “With Heart and Hands and Voices,” the service will be led by the Rev. Dr. Emily Anderson, pastor of New Providence Presbyterian and a member of the College’s Board of Directors. Worship music will be performed by Maryville College’s Voices of Praise gospel choir, the choirs of New Providence Presbyterian and Highland Presbyterian, the Maryville First United Methodist Church Evensong Handbell Choir, piper Sam Newton and organist Peggy Rogers.
Public invited to Inaugural Dinner
The Inaugural Dinner is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., April 14, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Knoxville. The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $20 per person and can be reserved by calling the College’s Advancement Office at 865.981.8204 or emailing email@example.com.
The dinner and evening program, which will take place inside the Summit Ballroom, will include an opportunity for attendees to pose questions to the new president.
Economics, education and environment discussed
On April 15, events for the public begin at 2 p.m. with a presentation on economics and education policy by Dr. Thomas Nechyba.
Nechyba, another colleague and friend of the new president, is professor of economics and public policy at Duke University, where he also directs the EcoTeach Center. His presentation in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre of the Clayton Center is free to the public.
“Tom is an award-winning teacher of undergraduates as well as being a leading scholar on the topic of education policy,” Bogart said. “He has the ability to explain difficult concepts in a way that they are not only understandable but that invite further exploration and questions, which is fundamental to the idea of lifelong learning.”
At 3:30 p.m., a panel discussion entitled “Environmental Sustainability and Maryville College Perspectives” will begin in the Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center.
Panelists will include Dr. Susan Ambler, associate professor of sociology; Dr. Ben Cash, professor of biology and chair of the Natural Sciences Division; Mr. Bruce Guillaume ’76, director of Mountain Challenge and ex-officio member of the College’s Environmental and Forestry Advisory Committee; Dr. Mark O’Gorman, associate professor of political science and coordinator of the environmental studies program; and Ms. Adrienne Schwarte, assistant professor of art and chairperson of EFAC.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Jeffrey Fager, vice president and dean of the College.
In keeping with the environmental theme of the afternoon, Maryville College students will plant a tree in honor of Bogart’s inauguration in a ceremony scheduled for 5:15 p.m. in Humphreys Court.
Mountain Challenge staff members will have the organization’s 55-foot Alpine Tower open to climbers from 8:30 until 10 a.m., April 16. The tower is located next to Crawford House.
Founded by Guillaume in 1987, Mountain Challenge takes students and professionals outdoors and provides high-quality, safe experiences that are designed to push comfort zones, build confidence and encourage teamwork. Activities are incorporated into the College’s curriculum.
Mountain Challenge is considered a distinctive program of the College.
Inaugural ceremony streamed online
The public is invited to attend the formal installation ceremony at 10:30 a.m., April 16, but should be advised that seating is limited inside the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. The ceremony will be streamed by Knox ivi, an online video company. Coverage can be accessed from the College’s homepage, maryvillecollege.edu, or knoxivi.com.
At least 40 delegates from other colleges and universities are expected, as well as alumni representatives.
Following the ceremony, a picnic lunch on the grounds will be held courtesy of Aramark Higher Education food services. Musical entertainment will be provided by Pistol Creek Catch of the Day and the Bill Swann Trio.
‘Cinderella’ concludes celebrations
The Appalachian Ballet Company will bring inaugural festivities to an end with a 7:30 p.m. performance of “Cinderella” on April 16.
The performance is open to the public in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. Tickets are available through the Clayton Center Box Office (865.981.8590) or online at KnoxvilleTickets.com.
