Recent grads join MC's Admissions staff

Doug Carter and Jessica White Phillips, two recent graduates of Maryville College, joined the College’s Admissions staff as admissions counselors Aug. 1.
At Maryville College, an admissions counselor is responsible for the coordination and implementation of recruitment efforts for prospective students, including attending recruiting events, cultivating leads and advising and providing comprehensive student support through the entire admissions application process, according to Dr. Dolph Henry, the College’s vice president for enrollment.
Henry said it is advantageous for prospective students to work with recent graduates through the college search process.
“In selecting a college, much of a student’s final decision comes down to individual fit. In other words, do prospective students feel that they ‘fit’ on a particular campus?’” he said. “By having Maryville College graduates in the Admissions Office, the concept of ‘fit’ can be more easily conveyed since graduates have lived that fit during their college career.”
Carter has worked in sales in the Knoxville area since graduating in 2009 with a
bachelor of arts degree. He studied business and organization management while at Maryville and currently operates Mini Helmets by Doug, a business that he founded in 2006.
A former member of the College’s football team, Carter came to Maryville from McDonough, Ga., and the state of Georgia is one of his main recruiting areas for the College. His territory also includes portions of upper East Tennessee, West Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau, as well as Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.
Locally, Carter is assisting prospective students at Alcoa and Maryville Christian and some Knoxville high schools.
Phillips, who was captain of the College’s Equestrian Team before graduating in 2010, has spent the last year employed as a veterinary technician with Pinnacle Equine in Knoxville and as a children’s camp counselor at Blackberry Farm in Walland. She served on the student staff of the College’s Admissions Office from 2007 until 2009.
A 2006 graduate of William Blount High School, Phillips double-majored in history and religion and graduated cum laude.
Her territories include all of the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, as well as North Carolina and South Carolina. Locally, she is recruiting at William Blount and high schools in Loudon, Monroe and Knox counties.
Each counselor offers unique perspective
Henry said he was excited about the different viewpoints Carter and Phillips bring to the Admissions team.
“Doug comes from the student-athlete perspective. At the College, you are a student first, then an athlete. Doug understands this and can articulate the expectations and rewards of suiting up for the Scots,” Henry said, adding that Carter can also articulate the appeal of the campus and surrounding community.
“Doug enjoyed the College and the area so much that he chose to stay here immediately after graduation, but he still has strong ties to his home state of Georgia, which will help in recruitment,” the vice president added.
Referencing Phillips’ student years at the College, Henry said the new admissions counselor brings to the job knowledge of both the admissions processes and extracurricular activities.
“Jessica was able to hit the ground running since she has previous admissions experience as a student,” he said. “One unique aspect Jessica brings to our office is her experience and knowledge of our equestrian team. This is a program that is growing rapidly.”
Prospective students are invited to visit Maryville College. Campus tours, conducted by current students who are members of the Maryville College Ambassador program, leave Fayerweather Hall from the Office of Admissions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday visits are accommodated through a series of Open House programs or campus tours offered on most Saturdays.
