The Maryville College-Community Concert Band, under the direction of Maryville College Associate Professor of Music Dr. Larry Smithee, will perform a Civil War-themed fall concert on Thurs., Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre.

“Since 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, the Concert Band will be performing several music selections that commemorate and pay homage to this important historical event,” Smithee said.

Selections will include “Antietam” by Whear; “Gettysburg: The Third Day” by Dawson; and “The Blue and the Grey” by Grundman. The band will also perform “Lincoln’s Address” by Persichetti, which will feature Maryville College President Dr. Tom Bogart as a guest narrator. Bogart will read Civil War period speeches by Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by music.

“We are really excited that President Bogart has agreed to do the narration part for this number,” Smithee said.

Smithee established the band in 1992. Musicians represent a mixture of ages. Adult members hail from Blount County and other surrounding communities, and are retired or engaged in a variety of professional endeavors, while student members are from Maryville College and several of the area’s other academic institutions.

The Nov. 17 event, which is free and open to the public, is part of Maryville College’s observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

“Our Civil War past is deeply imbedded in our nation’s consciousness, even today,” Smithee said. “I think listeners will be very moved by the music for this program.”
