To celebrate the power of reading and to commemorate what would have been the 109th birthday of renowned children's book author Theodor Seuss Geisel, area children are invited to a birthday party for Dr. Seuss on Fri., March 1.
The celebration is scheduled for 4-5 p.m. in the Samuel Tyndale Wilson Center for Campus Ministry (CCM) on the Maryville College campus. Admission is free.
The party will include activities such as coloring, reading Seuss stories, singing songs, playing games and making crafts. Birthday cake will be served, and there will be a guest appearance by the Cat in the Hat and friends.
The event is organized by Maryville College’s Student Literacy Corps, whose goal is to promote literacy in Blount County.
Geisel, born March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass., wrote more than 60 children’s books during his career, including bestsellers Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.
This beloved writer has many posthumous honors, including the 2002 opening of the Dr. Seuss National Sculpture Garden located in his hometown of Springfield. On May 28, 2008, the Governor of California inducted Seuss into the state’s Hall of Fame. Thousands of Seuss fans celebrate his birthday each year.
The National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day” is also celebrated on the anniversary of Geisel’s birth.
