SACSCOC reaffirms MC’s accreditation
June 25, 2014
The Board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) voted this month to reaffirm Maryville College’s accreditation with no additional follow up.
SACSCOC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in Southern states. Every 10 years, colleges and universities accredited by SACSCOC participate in a comprehensive review according to SACSCOC guidelines.
“The rigorous peer review process of accreditation is an important component in ensuring that Maryville College is fulfilling its mission,” said Dr. William T. “Tom” Bogart, president of Maryville College. “I am grateful for the hard work of everyone on campus throughout the process and for the constructive and thorough review by members of both the off-site and on-site review teams.”
SACSCOC’s on-site committee visited Maryville College in November and concluded that the College was in complete compliance and had no recommendations. During that visit, the committee also approved Maryville College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a five-year, institution-specific plan that “focuses on learning outcomes and/or the environment supporting student learning,” according to SACSCOC. It is a key component of the reaccreditation process.
Maryville College’s QEP, titled “Maryville College Works,” is a carefully designed, integrated program that builds bridges between the classroom and the workplace. Through significant practical experiences, students will understand how applicable and marketable their disciplinary and core skills are in the workforce.
“Committee members were very complimentary in their assessment of the program,” Bogart said. “They were particularly impressed with the plan’s focus to connect the liberal arts with practical, vocational experience; its structure to encourage reflective thinking in students; its use of existing resources to meet objectives; and the shared vision and passion for the plan among administrators, faculty and staff and alumni.”
