MC’s teacher prep programs nationally recognized

Two of Maryville College’s teacher preparation programs were ranked among the best in the nation in the second annual report released by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), a national research advocacy group.

Maryville College’s bachelor of arts in mathematics with teacher certification program was ranked 17th nationally out of 824 secondary programs ranked in NCTQ’s 2014 Teacher Prep Review.

“[Maryville College’s] undergraduate secondary program was one of only 107 out of 2,400 elementary and secondary programs making our Top Ranked lists in 2014,” said Dr. Arthur McKee, managing director of Teacher Preparation Studies at NCTQ, in announcing Maryville College’s achievement.

The College’s bachelor of arts in child development and learning with teacher certification program was also recognized, ranking 188th nationally out of 788 elementary programs ranked by NCTQ.

NCTQ is an organization that advocates for reforms in a broad range of teacher policies at the federal, state and local levels in order to increase the number of effective teachers.

The NCTQ Teacher Prep Review provides detailed information about 2,400 elementary, secondary and special education programs across the country. NCTQ examines several aspects of training for effective teaching in the PK-12 system, including candidates’ academic strengths, the depth of their mastery of the subjects they will teach, and the quality of the opportunities to practice.

The rankings are published on NCTQ’s and U.S News & World Report’s websites.

“We are pleased that our teacher preparation programs are ranked among the best in the nation,” said Dr. Terry Simpson, professor of secondary education and director of teacher education at Maryville College. “Maryville College has a long and proud tradition of preparing teachers who demonstrate and promote excellence in teaching and learning, and we know that all of our teacher preparation programs provide students with the skills, dispositions and knowledge needed to be successful first-year teachers.”

Maryville College’s education program, which offers 16 areas of teacher licensure, strives to prepare new teachers for the demands of the 21st-century classroom through extensive field-based experiences, essential coursework in the teaching area supported by professional education courses and project-based learning designed in partnership with local school administrators and teachers.
