2003 MLK Celebration Events

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Maryville College is hosting and presenting two days of campus and community events. A schedule of activities and services is listed below. Our invitation is extended to all.

Sunday, January 19th – 4pm
A community worship service will be held in Wilson Chapel. Providing the service’s sermon will be the Rev. Cecil C. Mills, Jr., of Johnson City, TN. Special music will be provided by the Blount County Celebration Choir, directed by Larry Ervin.

Monday, January 20th – MLK Day
(Beginning at 9:50am, classes will close to allow students to attend any the MLK Day events.)

  • 10am – A special presentation covering black history will be held in Wilson Chapel.
  • 10:30am – A panel discussion addressing recent race-related happenings will be held in Wilson Chapel. Come join the conversation on current black leaders, Senator Trent Lott’s statements, Haitian immigration, and the “black face” incidents on college campuses.
  • 11:30am – Bring your appetite to the Proffitt Dining Room (inside Pearson’s) for a soul food luncheon. Cost is $4.60 and can be paid at the front of the cafeteria.
  • 1:30pm – The Annual March, honoring the peaceful protests Martin Luther King Jr. led across the South, will begin at the MLK Center in Alcoa. The march will culminate at Wilson Chapel where the Community Celebration Program will take place.
  • 3:00pm – Reverend Harold Turner of Atlanta, GA, father of Maryville College Senior, Harold Turner, will be the keynote speaker for this year’s Community Celebration program. The Blount County Celebration Choir, led by Maryville College’s Director of Multicultural Affairs, Larry Ervin, will provide music.
