Student Religious Groups
Maryville College is proud of its commitment to faith and learning. In order to foster growth in the spiritual lives of students outside of the classroom, the Center for Campus Ministries serves as a host and resource to several student religious groups on campus. These groups are student lead, and they cover a large spectrum of religious thought and tradition. For more information about any of these student programs, you can stop by the Samuel Tyndale Wilson Center for Campus Ministry, or call us at 865-981-8299.
Catholic Community
Catholic Community is a small gathering of students and faculty that meets weekly to discuss current issues, hold informal Bible studies, and learn more about the Roman Catholic tradition. The Maryville College Catholic Community is open to everyone- regardless of one's religious background. We embrace other faiths, opinions, and questions as being integral to growing and learning about our own values. MCCC tries to take one pilgrimage a year (we're hoping to see Pope Benedict XVI when he comes to Washington, D.C. this spring) and sponsor an event or forum as well. MCCC meets every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in the Samuel Tyndale Wilson Center for Campus Ministry.
FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a religious organization that focuses on ministry through athletics. The club is not limited to athletes, but emphasizes their influence and leadership through Jesus Christ and uses this influence and leadership to minister to all students. There are 8 students who make up the leadership team in this club and they include athletes and non athletes. Meetings normally consist of games, live music, and speakers who offer a wide range of content including personal stories to Bible lessons. The students involved in FCA are both athletes and non athletes, Christian and non believers, friends, and strangers. Everyone is welcome in this club and anyone who is interested should come to the Honaker room (in Cooper Athletic Center) every Tuesday at 9:15 p.m.
Intervarsity Christian Fellowship
In response to God's love, grace and truth:
The Purpose of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture
and God's purposes in the world. Our Vision is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed, and world changers developed. We meet every Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Campus Ministry for worship and throughout the week at different times and locations for small groups.
Progressive Christian Community
If Christian faith is important to you, but you wonder how it fits within our contemporary world, and if you want a community with which to share your journey, PCC may be for you! We as the PCC desire to build a community where questioning and struggling with faith is not only accepted but also encouraged. We hope to be a community of followers who can tackle the hard questions of faith and know that the answers aren’t always easy or clear. Since this group affirms ambiguity and values uncertainty, it doesn’t try to provide answers for age-old questions. Rather, this group is trying to articulate thoughtful questions inside of the reality of faith. If you are looking for simple answers, we might not be for you (but come anyways). If, like Jacob, you are wrestling with God, then we have one heck of a wrestling arena (wear your spandex). Join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Campus Ministry.
Student Chaplains
The student chaplains serve the students by providing encouragement, programs, and spiritual help. They provide listening ears and a caring heart for the concerns and thoughts of students. The chaplains are here to be a caring presence for students of all backgrounds, religions, and ideals, and to provide a place for reflection in the residence halls. To speak with the student chaplains, you can email student.chaplains@maryvillecollege.edu and set up a meeting time, or you can stay anonymous and discuss your issues online.
Sisters in Spirit
We exist as a group of women in support of and love for one another as Sisters in Spirit, standing in solidarity and equality with our brothers in spirit, as well. We seek to rise above all societal barriers, including race, class, religion, age, background, sexual orientation, ability, or any other prejudice in order to seek greater understanding of ourselves individually and in community as women. We strive to educate one another through discussion, reflection, spiritual growth, and social action. We desire to foster spiritual growth among women, justice for men and women alike, and to encourage positive relationships within the Maryville College community. Sisters in Spirit meets in the CCM on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
Voices of Praise
Voices of Praise is a singing group comprised of young people representing all facets of the schools population. The group was started to give minorities pride in an aspect of their culture, but it has grown beyond the black and white to the spiritual renewing and strengthening that we all get from being a part of this cup of Christ. We were made to praise. Voices of Praise meets on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. in Bartlett 102.
