Student Literacy Corps
The Student Literacy Corps is an autonomous student group focused on literacy education. As a national model for campus-based literacy programs by SCALE (Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education), Literacy Corps members have designed their own Board, made their own policies, and written their own grants. Approximately 50 students participate in the Corps, some of which are Bradford and Bonner Scholars. Corps members tutor at Blount County Justice Center, Blount County Children’s Home, and the Adult Basic Education Center. Each spring semester, the Literacy Corps “course” is offered for credit so that students may participate in a more in-depth discussion of literacy theory and practice.
