Learning Center & Disability Services

Thanks to a donation from the Denso Corporation, the Maryville College Learning Center is able to provide academic support services for Maryville College students. The academic resources provided through the Maryville College Denso Learning Center are designed to provide skills and strategies to help students become independent and active learners and to achieve academic success.

Learning Strategies

The Learning Center provides learning strategies and consultations to individuals throughout the semester focusing on learning styles, textbook strategies, note-taking skills, test preparation and test-taking strategies. Learning Center Staff also assist students with academic goal setting, organization, and time management.

Peer-Tutoring

The Learning Center offers individual tutoring for most first and second year courses. Individual tutoring is provided through designated drop-in tutoring hours. All tutor sessions are provided free of charge to MC students. The Learning Center posts a listing of classes and designated days/times each semester.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are weekly review sessions for students enrolled in historically difficult courses. The sessions are facilitated by a trained SI student leader. SI Leaders are students who have previously completed the course. SI Leaders come back into the class and attend each meeting taking notes over the lectures and completing the readings for the course. The SI Leaders then provide weekly review sessions for students to get together with others in their class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, and develop strategies for preparing for exams. Students enrolled in classes with SI Sessions are encouraged to attend weekly sessions to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades. The Learning Center publishes a listing of classes that offer SI sessions each semester.

Disability Services in the Learning Center

Students with documented disabilities may register for academic accommodations based on their specific disabilities. Academic accommodations can come in many forms: test accommodations, in class assistance, assistive technology, alternate format reading materials, furniture, equipment, and more. The accommodations you qualifiy for will be based on the documentation you provide and the information on your application for disability services. Students must contact the Learning Center at 865.981.8124 at the beginning of each semester to schedule an appointment to review documentation of their specific disability and arrange accommodations for classes.
