Computing Resources

Computers for general student use are located in the library in Thaw Hall. This allows students to do research, write papers, prepare presentations, and complete multimedia projects in one location. Sixty computers in the reading room and the lower level stacks provide access to the campus network, the Internet, and various software packages. There is a computer specially equipped for users with visual and mobility impairments, and a non-networked computer and laser printer for producing final copies of theses and resumes on special paper provided by the student. Thirty wireless laptop computers are also available for use in the library. For descriptions and locations of these computers, software lists, and attached peripherals, see library.maryvillecollege.edu. Select Library Services then Computer Lab Services.

Help using the computers and the software packages loaded on them is available at the Help Desk when the library is open. This desk is also the place to report any difficulties you may encounter using the computer equipment. Please be aware that technical problems with the computers or campus network accounts may need to be referred to the Information Technology department, which is open during standard  business hours.

Students will need the user name and password issued by the Information Technology department to use computers in the library. Students will need to know their Maryville College  e-mail address to check their College e-mail accounts. The library does not have access to any of this personal information; questions about passwords and accounts will be referred to the Instructional Technology department, which are open during standard business hours.

There are three networked laser printers in the library. Each student is given an allotment of 500 free pages of printing per semester (1,000 free pages per academic year). Any unused pages of printing roll forward to the next semester for the student’s entire time at Maryville College. Additional printing may be purchased in blocks of 50 pages for $2.50 or 100 pages for $5.00; purchased printing also rolls forward.  You can also purchase 3.5” diskettes and blank CD/DVDs for data storage. Ask at the Computer Help Desk for details.

Students using library computers agree to abide by the Maryville College Network and Computer Use Policy and the Acceptable Use and Internet Use policies posted in the library. The Acceptable Use policy states that academic work takes precedence over all other uses of computers, that use of resources accessed via Internet must comply with copyright regulations and with academic integrity standards in the Student Handbook, and that computer use may be limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting.

Several academic divisions on campus provide computer labs specialized for instruction and research in specific subject areas to students enrolled in those subjects. Check with your advisor or professor for information about these labs.
