The Counseling Center, located in Bartlett Hall, Rm 337, is committed to promoting the health and well-being of the Maryville College community. The Center provides assessment, short-term care, and referrals related to academic, social, and personal concerns. Educational programs on study skills, stress reduction, self-management, chemical dependency, and personal development are also offered. All services are confidential. Signs That Someone is in Mental Distress
- Statements about suicide or suicidal thoughts
- Statements about harming or killing others; violent behavior
- Evidence that someone is self-harming (cutting, burning, purging)
- Frequent excessive use of alcohol/drugs
- Inability to get out of bed for class several days in a row
- Extreme withdrawal from social contact, friends, family
- Sudden changes in personality, behavior
What To Do if Someone Else is In Trouble
- Don’t act shocked or judgmental
- Don’t dismiss the problem
- Don’t give advice
- Stay with a person who is suicidal
- Don’t keep secrets – tell a person who is trained to help (not Facebook, not other friends: a counselor, RA, faculty member, campus security, 911 if a crisis)
