SPIRITUAL LIFE
The campus ministry program of the College invites involvement in worship celebration, Christian fellowship, both direct and structural service to the wider community, and counseling under the guidance of a full-time Campus Minister. The Campus Minister is available for counsel and prayer. Call 865.981.8298 for an appointment or just drop by the Center for Campus Ministry (CCM).
Local churches are always eager to welcome Maryville College students. At the beginning of each fall semester, there is a picnic during Orientation, which allows churches to introduce themselves to MC students, and a CCM Open House in the spring. If you need help finding a church community that fits your needs or background, feel free to contact Anne McKee, Campus Minister, at 865.981.8298, or Kathleen Farnham, Director of Church Relations, 865.981.8217.
Worship
Students, faculty, and staff gather each Tuesday at 1:15pm for an ecumenical worship service in the Center for Campus Ministry. These services, as well as special observations for Advent, Lent, and Easter, are coordinated by the Worship Planning Committee and the Campus Minister. February Meetings is a worship and lecture series focusing on spiritual growth, renewal, and service.
Fellowship
The Center for Campus Ministry is open daily, 8:00am - 12:00 midnight, as a space for informal conversation, quiet reflection or as a resource for involvement. Fellowship opportunities meeting at various times during the week are:
- Baptist Student Union
- Bonner Scholars
- Catholic Community
- Church and College Scholars
- Fellowship of Christian Athletes
- Intervarsity Christian Fellowship
- Peace and World Concerns
Student Chaplains
Student Chaplains provide peer ministry through offering programs, prayer groups, support for other students and coordination of the Micah 6 program. A student chaplain is assigned to each residence hall.
Direct Service Opportunities
Several campus initiatives allow student volunteers to interact with a variety of people in the local community:
- Good Samaritan Center provides free and low-cost health care to those in need.
- Student Literacy Corps with initiatives at Asbury Acres Retirement Center, the jail, and the Adult Basic Education Center
- Habitat for Humanity is a national organization providing low cost housing for the poor.
- Children’s Advocacy Center provides a safe place for non-custodial parents and children to visit.
For other volunteer opportunities, please contact the Director of Volunteer Services at 865.981.8122.
Peace and World Concerns
This committee provides outlets for expressing global concern through educational programming and international projects such as the Bread for the World, Heifer Project, and campus awareness of and involvement in pressing social issues. This group provides educational programming and supports volunteer efforts to address human needs and concerns with particular emphasis on peacemaking. The Vice President and Dean of the College appoints a faculty member to serve as Chair. The chair works closely with the Campus Minister to involve membership from across the campus. Membership is open and the Campus Minister serves as an ex-officio member.
