Description: A study of works by major British authors, ranging from the Old English period through the eighteenth century. By providing an overview of the development of the British literary tradition, the course will enable students to situate works studied in advanced and period-specific courses within a broad context. Authors to be studied may include Chaucer, Langland, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Johnson.
