Sara Hellums Kramer
Class of 1940
All Notes Memoriam

Sara Lee Hellums Kramer, 95, who died on Monday in her Knoxville home, lived most of her life in East Tennessee. A former teacher and chemist, her major life focus was her family. She was born on April 14, 1920, in the west Texas town of Rotan, to Fannie Mae Beauchamp Hellums and John Verrell Hellums, who were in the grocery business. At age nine – ‘when my feet would reach the pedals,’ she said – she became her father’s chauffeur, driving his truck as he made the rounds to his stores. She graduated from Rotan High School at age 16. Influenced by her staunchly Presbyterian mother and supported by her father, she chose Maryville College, a thousand miles from home, enrolling in 1936. Majoring in chemistry and minoring in English, she played tennis and joined the debate team. A local student, Russell Arnold Kramer, was also a debater, as well as a tackle on the football team. Maryville College did not allow unchaperoned dating, but debate team activities created opportunities for friendship to grow into something more serious. The couple served as queen and king of a ‘barn warming’ event in the old college gym. When Sara Hellums and Arnold Kramer graduated Cum Laude, they already had decided to marry. Arnold began law school, while Sara returned to Rotan to help care for her ailing father, who died that year, and to teach high school. She also assisted her mother in operating the Rotan store. On March 8, 1942, just prior to Arnold’s leaving for Army Air Force duty, they were married at the First Methodist Church in Maryville. Sara worked as a chemist at DuPont in Buffalo, New York, for nearly two years. Reunited after the war ended, they moved to Ann Arbor where Arnold earned his law degree in 1946. They returned to Maryville briefly before moving to Knoxville, where Arnold began practicing with his father, Russell R. Kramer. They were joined by Arnold’s brother Jack in the firm now known as Kramer Rayson LLP. Sara and Arnold raised three children who graduated from Knox County public schools – John Reed, Sara Lynne and Randall Arnold. After Arnold was named Executive Vice President and General Counsel of ALCOA in 1974, the couple spent a decade in Pittsburgh while maintaining their Knoxville residence. They joined Church Street Methodist in 1947. Among her leadership and service, Sara was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and active in United Methodist Women. At various times she worked with the League of Women Voters, the Roundtable of Christians and Jews, the Blount Mansion Association, and the Knoxville Bar Association Auxiliary. She remained an enthusiastic supporter of the Knoxville Symphony and the Knoxville Museum of Art and a member of the President’s Circle at Maryville College. She leaves her three children and their spouses, Reed Kramer and Tamela Hultman; Lynne Kramer D’Huyvetter and Charles D’Huyvetter; and Randall Kramer and Kathryn Daugherty Kramer. She also is survived by one brother, J. David Hellums, and his wife, Marilyn, and two brothers-in-law, Roy Kramer and Lyman White. Her passion in later years was her eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren – Kwindla Hultman Kramer, his wife, Nina Kuruvilla, and their son, CP Lucas Varghese Kuruvilla-Kramer; Robert Arnold (Roban) Hultman Kramer and his wife, Emily Zackin; Laura Lee D’Huyvetter Johnson, her husband, James Johnson, and son, Jonah; Gretchen D’Huyvetter Cobb, her husband, James Cobb, and four sons – Ian Arnold, Andrew, Oliver and Everett; Caroline D’Huyvetter Carr, her husband, Travis Carr, son, Waylon, and daughter, Mae Charles; Chas D’Huyvetter and his fiancée, Rachel Burke; Lydia Kramer Lee and her husband, Zachary Lee; and Hannah Kramer and her fiancé, Brian Lee. A memorial service is being held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, at Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville with a reception to follow. Memorial gifts may be made to the Arnold and Sara Kramer Library Fund at Maryville College (502 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN, 37804) or the Memorial Fund at Church Street UMC (900 Henley St, Knoxville, TN, 37902).

Charles F. Lamb
Class of 1956
All Notes Memoriam

The Rev. Dr. Charles F. Lamb used sermons to address his congregations. But he used his frequent letters to the editor and “My View” columns published in The Buffalo News to reach a much wider audience. His personal columns were droll, homespun musings about such topics as the joys of learning Spanish, the challenges of loud music in restaurants and the antics of his beloved chocolate Labrador retriever, Izzy. His letters were focused on the issues of the day that most compelled him – welcoming refugees, protecting the environment and living a life of spirit-filled joy. “When we’d go out, people would recognize him from the columns,” said his wife of 40 years, Betty J. Lamb. The Rev. Lamb, of Youngstown, died Jan. 23, 2019, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport after a yearlong illness. He was 84. He was born in Maryville, Tenn., the only child of Charles F. and Sadie (Tedder) Lamb. His father was a sanitarian who inspected agricultural facilities. The Rev. Lamb graduated cum laude from Maryville College with a bachelor’s degree in 1956, from the Graduate Seminary of Phillips University with a Master of Divinity degree in 1961, and from New York Theological Seminary with a Doctor of Ministry degree in 1990. He was ordained in 1961 in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and moved to New York in 1961 to work at East Aurora Christian Church for a decade. From 1971 to 1975, he was associate regional minister of the Disciples of Christ in the Northeast, which included New York, New England and New Jersey. From 1975 to 1998, he was regional minister. He received mutual standing in the United Church of Christ in the 1970s. “He was very ecumenical-minded,” said his wife. “He believed that if all churches worked together, wonders could be done.” The Rev. Lamb retired in 1998 but continued to work as assistant to the pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. In 2017, he was interim pastor at Payne Avenue Christian Church in North Tonawanda. He worked as an adjunct professor in the Religion Department of Niagara University from 1998 to 2004. On Dec. 29, 1979, in Niagara Falls, he married Betty J. Zimmerman. She is retired from the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara Falls. He was an elected village trustee in East Aurora, and was chairman of the College of Regional Ministers of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Rev. Lamb was active in environmental affairs, serving on the executive committee of both the Niagara Group of the Sierra Club and of Residents for Responsible Government in Youngstown, which in the mid-2000s lobbied against expansion of CWM Waste Management. In 1999, he served on the Restoration Advisory Board for the former Lake Ontario Ordnance Works site. In a 2002 letter to the editor, the Rev. Lamb wrote on what would become a frequent theme, protecting the environment. He wrote, “Many Scriptures emphasize that humans have a responsibility to care for the creation. … A pure mountain stream, a sunset in a clear sky, or a healthy forest all speak to our souls of the importance of preserving our earthly home.” He resembled an older Abraham Lincoln, although he was a few inches shorter. The Rev. Lamb’s wife once made him a top hat and asked him to recite the Gettysburg Address, which he had memorized, for a talent show at Cradle Beach. Instead of the expected smiles, the audience was so moved that some wept. In one 2010 column, the Rev. Lamb wrote of seeing a sign in a restaurant: “If you have any problems, just let us know.” When he began sharing his problems with the cashier – “bills, car problems and health issues” – she interrupted him to ask, “Why are you telling me all this?” “Your sign told me to tell you,” he said. ” ‘It means problems here in the restaurant!’ she exclaimed. But that isn’t what it said,” he wrote. In 2011, he mused about this world and the next one. “Heaven may be beautiful, but this planet is pretty good,” he wrote. “There are so many places on this earth I haven’t seen yet. I’d just as soon see more of them before trying out another place.” The Rev. Lamb also wrote four books about his life as a minister. Besides his wife, the Rev. Lamb is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Susan Latz, Linda L. Macfarland and Jennifer J. Mehl; two stepsons, Mark David Ott and Matthew Benjamin Ott; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church St. Memorials may be made to Week of Compassion P.O. Box 1986 Indianapolis, Ind., 46206 or Northeast Region Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1402 Washington Ave. Parkersburg, Va., 26101.

passed away Feb. 11, 2014. Betty chose to return to the family home for her final days after a brief hospital stay. Family rallied around her to reminisce, share stories, and ease her transition. Betty leaves behind children and their spouses, Jim and Elaine (Owens) Law, Joe and Lea Anne (Smith) Law, Jeff Law; special family friend, Jackie Law; and Ken Bowman. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Allen “Blondy” Law; daughter, Gail Law Bowman; and parents, Horace and Verna (Anderson) Clemens. Betty wants her grandchildren to know they gave Memaw “a bodacious life” and she is proud of Brandon Law, Jared Law (fiancée, Caitlin Smith), Victoria Law Haynes (Steven), Abby Bowman, Makenzie Law, and Derek Law. She deeply loved her family and her second grade students. Betty started teaching in 1950 and taught multiple generations within the same families during her 32 years with Maryville City Schools. Nearly every public outing included reunions as past students stopped to hug their “favorite teacher” and chuckle over times spent in her classroom. (The Law family wants Ms. Law’s students to know that she remembered special details about each of her school children: personalities, life skills, adjustments to her rules, and achievements to gain access to the classroom goodie box. She truly cared about her family of students and she delighted in their life and career successes.). Betty asked that people remember her in their own way. At her request, there will not be a public service. Our family will celebrate her through our continued daily contributions to a robust life.

Dan’s ancestry was very important to him, having many generations in Blount County. Early families in Blount County included his family names Lawson, Myers, McCampbell, and Long.

Dan was a successful businessman, civic leader, and friend to many. But, he was first of all a Christian gentleman, who never failed to show courtesy and respect to everyone he met. He held leadership positions and was honored by Maryville Kiwanis, United Way, American Red Cross, Leadership Blount, and the Daily Times Alumni Wall of Fame. His career was as an independent insurance agency owner of Lawson Insurors.

Dan was an avid runner, familiar to many as he ran the roads of Maryville. He loved hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains, having great knowledge of the trails across the park. Following retirement, he volunteered for many years in the Smokies, maintaining trails and providing guidance for back-country hikers. Dan received The President’s Call To Service Award in 2009, recognizing over 9,000 hours of volunteer service to the GSMNP. He chaired the Great Smoky Mountains Association, serving on the board for many years.

A veteran of the Air National Guard, Dan was a 1953 graduate of Everett High School and earned a B.A. from Maryville College in 1957. He and Gaynell were faithful members of Peck’s Memorial United Methodist Church.
