DESCRIPTION:Witherspoon Lecture Series\nFeaturing Dr. Christopher Magra\nWataugan Self-Governance: The Trans-Appalachian South and the Declaration of Independence\, 1763-1776 \nThe Watauga Settlement was one of the first settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. Settlers such as John Sevier and Daniel Boone created their own government known as the Watauga Association prior to the Declaration of Independence. Sevier and Boone insisted British imperial policies limited westward expansion and failed to protect settlers from Native American resistance movements. They believed these policies were detrimental to their safety and prosperity. Thomas Jefferson agreed with these sentiments and incorporated them in the Declaration. \nDr. Chris Magra is Professor of Early American history at the University of Tennessee. He is also the Director of the Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War. He has published two books on the American Revolution. The Fisherman’s Cause examines the New England codfisheries and the transatlantic business rivalries and resource competition among fish merchants that helped bring about the imperial crisis. Poseidon’s Curse explains why British naval impressment contributed to the origins of the Revolution. He is currently completing an edited collection of essays on the military history of the Declaration of Independence that will be out with the University of Tennessee Press next July for the 250th anniversary.

He and his team recently completed an award-winning\, multimillion-dollar renovation of the exhibit galleries. He received his graduate education in history at the University of Tennessee\, and his research focuses on the southern backcountry in the American Revolution.

DESCRIPTION:The Small Choral Ensembles Concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall.  It will feature Off Kilter\, The Lads\, and The Lassies performing a diverse mix of choral music in the intimate setting and showcasing expressive chamber-style singing across various genres and traditions. DESCRIPTION:Let’s do the Time Warp again! Join us for our annual kickoff to the spooky season with APO’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” shadow cast! Our talented cast of MC actors will recreate the cult classic movie in celebration of its 50th anniversary! Performances will be at 8 p.m. and midnight on Saturday\, Sept. 27\, in Lambert Recital Hall. Doors will open half an hour before the show starts. Performances are general admission with limited seating\, so first come\, first serve! \nThis event is open to all MC students\, faculty\, staff\, and 18+ community members. In the event of reaching seating capacity\, priority will be given to MC students. You may be asked to show an MC ID or state issued ID at the door. Feel free to dress up in your best Transylvanian attire!!!
