SUMMARY:The Education of a Senator: From JFK to Trump with Author Lamar Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Maryville College is proud to present an evening with Lamar Alexander for his new book\, The Education of a Senator: From JFK to Trump.\n\n\nIn partnership with our friends at Neighborly Books\, join us at the Maryville College Downtown Center to celebrate the arrival of the Senator’s memoir in conversation with Brittany Tarwater of WVLT. This free event will take place at the Maryville College Downtown Center\, 118 E Church Ave\, Maryville\, TN on Thursday\, June 4th. Doors will open at 6:30pm for a reception with an interview and Q&A to occur from 7:00-8:00pm followed by a book signing. \n \nThis is a free event\, but because space is limited\, an RSVP is required to attend. Signed copies of The Education of a Senator will be on sale at the event and can be preordered from Neighborly Books to be picked up at the event – https://neighborlybooks.com/ \n \nAbout the book: \nA behind-the-scenes story of the last sixty years of American politics\, told with purpose and humor by a political legend who worked with ten presidents\, made deals with both Obama and Trump\, and believes that serving in public office is the best way to help the largest number of people and to keep our Republic from falling apart. \n“To read Lamar Alexander’s vivid and surprising memoir is to be in conversation with a man who knows how to tell a great story.” — Jon Meacham\, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author \n“What a wonderful and refreshing memoir! Lamar Alexander has been a gift to us–more interested in getting things done and improving the lives of others than in grabbing headlines and bashing an opponent. Bravo!” — Ken Burns\, Filmmaker\, The American Revolution \n \nAbout Lamar Alexander: \nLamar Alexander has long been known as one of America’s most principled and effective statesmen. As US Senator\, Alexander shepherded major laws that today govern K-12 education\, medical innovation\, and maintenance of our national parks. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said\, “For eighteen years\, there was Lamar Alexander\, and there was the rest of us. He was hands-down one of the most brilliant\, most thoughtful\, and most effective legislators any of us have ever seen.” As governor\, Alexander brought the auto industry to Tennessee and made it the first state to pay teachers more for teaching well. He was chairman of the Senate Republican Conference\, the nation’s governors\, and of President Reagan’s “Commission on Americans Outdoors.” He served as US Education Secretary and as a university president. \nAlexander was also known for campaigning in a plaid shirt and performing on the piano with twenty-seven symphonies and on the Grand Ol’ Opry. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and New York University Law School. He and his late wife Honey were married for fifty-four years\, had four children and nine grandchildren. His parents were teachers. A seventh generation Tennessean\, Alexander lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maryville where he grew up. This is his tenth book\, all written by the author himself. \n \nParking: \nFor your convenience\, there are several free parking options in Downtown Maryville. For those willing to take the stairs\, we recommend using the Downtown Center’s lower parking lot\, accessible via a left turn on Court Street before Tri-Hop Brewery. Alternative parking options include Founder’s Lot (across from Vienna Coffee)\, the City of Maryville Municipal ParkingGarage\, or the upper-level lot across from the Downtown Center on Court Street. \nFor those requiring accessible parking\, limited spaces are available at the front of the Downtown Center. If accessible parking isn’t needed\, we kindly encourage you to utilize the parking garages.

SUMMARY:Tennessee’s Toxic Plants
DESCRIPTION:Learn to spot Tennessee’s most common toxic plants through hands-on identification and engage in activities to learn about their phytotoxins\n\n\nThis two‑hour\, hands‑on class will introduce you to some of Tennessee’s common toxic plants. You will learn key identifying features\, practice quick field sketches\, and discuss when processing can render some foraged species edible (and when plants are simply never safe to eat). \nIn the first hour\, we will cover a variety of plants and their toxic components so you will be prepared to recognize them in the wild. The second hour we’ll cover some ethnobotanical history\, look at how some of these toxic plants are safely processed and used in traditional Appalachian foodways\, and we’ll end with a group cooking activity that will demonstrate not all parts of a toxic plant are toxic. \nYou’ll leave with a set of toxic plant ID cards\, a small sketch journal\, a bottle of infused simple syrup\, and the confidence to safely explore Tennessee’s beautiful and unique landscape.
