MC observes Constitution Day Sept. 16

Sept. 12, 2016

Maryville College will host “Know Your Constitution,” a fun and educational quiz game, on Fri., Sept. 16.

The event, which will be held from noon until 1:00 p.m. in the Proffitt Dining Room of Pearsons Hall, is part of Maryville College’s observance of the 229th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution.

The event is free and open to the Maryville College community and the public.

The Proffitt Dining Room is located in the back of the Margaret Ware Dining Room. Guests who are not on the meal plan must enter through the dining room's front doors. The all-you-can-eat buffet lunch is $8.50.

All participants and spectators will receive a free copy of the Constitution, and top-scoring participants will earn door prizes. Cupcakes will also be served during the event.

In 2005, Congress passed legislation declaring that “each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution.”

The Constitution Day celebration became an annual event at Maryville College and colleges and universities across the country in 2005.

“Not only is it important to regularly celebrate the core document that created American government, that importance is amplified in a presidential election year,” said Dr. Mark O’Gorman, professor of political science at Maryville College. “The U.S. Constitution explains how we choose our president, and why elections matter in a democratic republic.”
