MC observes Easter 2018 with annual sunrise service

March 13, 2018

Maryville College’s annual Easter Sunrise Service will be held on Sun., April 1, 2018 at 7 a.m. on Lloyd Beach. The service is open to the community.

The Rev. Dr. Anne D. McKee, campus minister, will deliver the sermon, titled “Who Do You Trust?”

Scripture for the sermon will be 1 Corinthians 15:1-11. Becky Chapman, office and music coordinator for the Center for Campus Ministry, will coordinate the music, along with student musicians.

Lloyd Beach is located behind Lloyd Hall, on the southeastern end of the campus, and offers a spectacular view of the sun rising over the Chilhowee Mountains. The service is casual, and attendees who are not able to stand during the service are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

"The irony of Easter falling on April Fool's Day will not be lost to any churches this year,” McKee said. “Paul told us to be ‘fools for Christ,’ so if it is foolish to gather early, to watch the sunrise and hear again the story of resurrection, then so be it. It is also essential, in a world of loss, to gather with others and witness together the joy that the gospel promises to all people."

All are invited to enjoy coffee, pastries and conversation on the porch of Willard House following the service.

In the event of rain, both the service and the breakfast will be held in the Samuel Tyndale Wilson Center for Campus Ministry (CCM).
