Maryville College recognized as a 2018-19 College of Distinction
July 3, 2018
Maryville College has been recognized for its innovative application of high-impact educational practices, earning its title as one of the nation’s Colleges of Distinction for the 2018-19 academic year.
The College is featured on CollegesofDistinction.com, a website and corresponding e-guidebook dedicated to honoring schools nationwide for their excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education. Colleges of Distinction praised Maryville College for “proving itself to be at the forefront of American higher education with a modern, student-centered approach to teaching. With a unique learning environment, its programming engages students with character-building first-year seminars and experiences, common intellectual experiences, service-learning programs, community engagement programs, undergraduate research, study abroad programs, internships and career preparation.”
According to the Colleges of Distinction website, Maryville College “has an extensive history of making a meaningful and lasting impact on its students’ lives,” and students earn college credit and valuable life experience while participating in study abroad programs, as well as through its Mountain Challenge program, Senior Study requirement, service learning, learning communities and internships.
Additionally, Maryville College’s experiential learning requirement begins “right when students step foot on campus,” which “allows students to learn how to adapt to a new environment, to act without a customary support system and to develop trust in their own resources of intelligence and discipline.” The College also is a community for learning that “includes persons with a variety of interests, backgrounds, beliefs and nationalities.”
“Faculty emphasize effective teaching and strive to build supportive relationships with their students, challenging them to grow in academic competence, personal and social maturity, and spiritual discernment and commitment,” the Colleges of Distinction website states. “In such an atmosphere of openness and caring, lasting friendships are formed. As they share a genuine concern for the world and work to fulfill the College’s mission and purpose, directors, administration, staff, faculty and students alike strive to build and strengthen the entire community.”
Maryville College is one of a select group of colleges to earn this prestigious designation, based on its excellence in Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community and Successful Outcomes. Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of a review of each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more.
“Maryville College believes that students are multidimensional people, and it is vital to challenge them to develop in many dimensions,” said Dr. Tom Bogart, Maryville College president. “Simple reductive measures, like an arbitrary ranking in a survey, don’t capture the multiple ways our students grow and succeed. The Colleges of Distinction recognition is meaningful because it is based on a deeper analysis, and we are pleased to be recognized as one of the nation’s 2018-19 Colleges of Distinction.”
Since 2000, the Colleges of Distinction website and guidebook have honored schools throughout the U.S. for their excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education. The cohort of schools in the Colleges of Distinction consortium distinguish themselves through their focus on the undergraduate experience. The website and annual guidebooks provide dynamic college profiles, customized tools, and resources for students, parents, and high school counselors. Now recognized as a College of Distinction, Maryville College stands out in the way it strives to help its students to learn, grow and succeed.”
