Meet Maryville is Sept. 29
‘Meet Maryville’ dates announced for 2018-2019
Sept. 10, 2018
High school students, adult learners and college transfer students are all invited to “Meet Maryville” on Sat., Sept. 29; Sat. Nov. 3, 2018; and Sat., March 30, 2019.
Hosted by Maryville College’s Admissions Office, the Meet Maryville preview day event is designed to help people truly get to know the nationally recognized liberal arts college, said Alayne Bowman, the College’s vice president for admissions and financial aid.
“Whether attendees have been regulars at athletic games or music concerts or have never set foot on campus, they’ll learn something new at Meet Maryville,” Bowman said. “In addition to learning about programs of study and campus life, students and parents will have an opportunity to learn about financial aid and scholarships, including the new full-tuition Dan and Melanie Mays McGill Scholarship, which will be awarded to high-achieving students starting in 2019.”
Check-in for Meet Maryville begins at 9 a.m. outside the Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center for the Arts. A welcome session, where attendees hear from College administrators and current students, follows at 9:30 a.m. inside the recital hall.
Faculty and staff representing all academic divisions and numerous programs will be available to answer questions and provide printed information during the “Explore MC” session at 10:45 a.m. inside the William Baxter Lee III Grand Foyer of the Clayton Center.
Starting at noon, lunch will be provided to attendees in the Margaret Ware Dining Room of Pearsons Hall.
An afternoon session for parents will cover financial aid, and students will have an opportunity to experience the College’s Mountain Challenge program firsthand. An optional campus tour led by student ambassadors will depart Fayerweather Hall at 1:30 p.m. Guests also have the option to choose a sustainability tour that highlights the College’s “green” initiatives.
Attendees at the Sept. 29 Meet Maryville can receive free passes to the Maryville College-Brevard College football game. Kick off is at 2 p.m. on Honaker Field.
STEMfest and STEMstay
For prospective students interested in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, the College invites them to attend the STEMfest Carnival, which begins at 3 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m. on Sept. 29.
Hosted by Maryville College’s branches of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and TriBeta Biological Honors Society (BBB), STEMfest offers activities such as playing Connect Four with a robot and performing “surgery” during a game of life-sized Operation. Multiple laboratory demonstrations will be held that allow attendees to gain hands-on experience and create souvenirs to take home.
The College also offers an overnight option, “STEMstay,” for prospective students attending the Sept. 29 Meet Maryville. STEMstay allows high school students to connect with current MC students and stay in an on-campus residence hall. On Sept. 30, STEMstay participants will be able to meet the College’s STEM faculty and learn about undergraduate research during a hike in the College Woods.
Other opportunities to visit announced
For students and family members who cannot attend a Meet Maryville, Bowman said her office offers several other options to visit campus.
During the academic year (September through May), the Office of Admissions offers tours Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Summer tours (June through August) are offered Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. Thursday evening tours beginning at 5:30 p.m. also are offered in the summer and through Sept. 20. (The College is in the Eastern time zone.)
“Even if they attend a Meet Maryville, we encourage students to schedule an individual visit at a later date, which can be more personalized,” Bowman said. “Visits that allow students to sit in on a class that relates to their area of interest and talk to faculty members who teach in their areas of interest really help prospective students answer that question of ‘fit’ – ‘Am I a good fit for Maryville College?’ ‘Is Maryville a good fit for me?’”
The College’s admissions office will offer Saturday tours at 9:30 a.m. eastern time on Sept. 15 and 22; Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27; Nov. 10 and 17; Dec. 1 and 15; Jan. 12, 19 and 26; Feb. 2 and 9; March 23; April 6 and 27; and May 11 and 18.
