MC3Band to present “200 Years of Wind Band” April 4

March 25, 2019

The MC3 Band, under the direction of Dr. Eric Simpson, will present a spring concert on Thurs., April 4, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. The concert, titled “200 Years of Wind Band,” is free and open to the public.

As Maryville College celebrates its Bicentennial, many members of the faculty and student body have dedicated their time and energy to celebrate the occasion with commemorative presentations. The College’s MC3Band joins that list with a concert that features wind compositions from the early 1800s to today, presented in sequential order.

The program will include “March in F” by Ludwig Van Beethoven; “Washington Grays” by Claudio S. Grafulla; “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa; “Suite Francaise, Opus 248” by Darius Milhaud; “Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa” by Ira Hearshen; and “Shimmering Joy” by Tyler S. Grant.

The MC3 Band serves a dual purpose: to provide a means of artistic expression for all of its members (community and student) within the wind band medium, and to provide MC students with the opportunity to perform and learn within a large ensemble setting.

Band members include working musicians, educators, college students, business professionals and retirees from throughout East Tennessee. Using a symphonic band instrumentation, the band performs repertoire from the entire scope of the wind band tradition.
