Maryville College named a 2019-20 College of Distinction

Aug. 20, 2019

Maryville College has been named a 2019-20 College of Distinction for its innovative, high-impact approach to education that focuses on student success and satisfaction.

As a nationally ranked institution of higher learning that successfully joins the liberal arts and professional preparation, Maryville College also received specialized recognition for career development, business and education.

The College is featured on, a website and corresponding e-guidebook dedicated to honoring schools nationwide for their excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education. Colleges of Distinction praised Maryville College for putting the student experience first, “providing all the tools and opportunities [students] need to become lifelong learners who are ready to take on any challenge in today’s ever-evolving society.”

Maryville College earned its recognition for the excellence exhibited in the classroom, incorporating high-impact practices throughout every student’s undergraduate education. Such student-centered programs include undergraduate research, study abroad programs, internships, first-year seminars, community-based learning programs, service-learning programs and interdisciplinary programs.

Maryville College is one of a select group of colleges to earn this prestigious designation, based on its excellence in Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community and Successful Outcomes. Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of a review of each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more.

“Maryville College believes that students are multidimensional people, and it is vital to challenge them to develop in many dimensions,” said Dr. Tom Bogart, Maryville College president. “Simple reductive measures, like an arbitrary ranking in a survey, don’t capture the multiple ways our students grow and succeed. The Colleges of Distinction recognition is meaningful because it is based on a deeper analysis, and we are pleased to be recognized as one of the nation’s 2019-20 Colleges of Distinction.”

MC programs recognized

Founded in 2000, Colleges of Distinction has advocated for schools whose undergraduate experiences are grounded in a philosophy of well-rounded, individualized engagement. The past 20 years has since seen the job market and society at large change exponentially, making it even more necessary for graduates to enter the workforce with adaptability and sharp critical thinking skills. Such qualities are best developed through the very kinds of hands-on experiences offered every day at Maryville College, according to Colleges of Distinction.

Maryville College’s career preparation, business and education programs received field of study/program recognitions (and corresponding badges) that highlight MC’s excellence in providing a curriculum that is comprehensive not only in course material, but also in practical- and soft-skills development. Colleges of Distinction praised Maryville College for meeting these needs with a blend of liberal arts education, program-specific training and abundant opportunities for real-world application.

Maryville College’s specialized badges represent a curriculum that invests in students’ innovative, critical thinking. Colleges of Distinction granted this further honor after a thorough review on such qualities as accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success. Colleges of Distinction offered the following reasons for recognizing these three MC programs:

  • Education: Maryville College is proud to graduate future educators who are not only knowledgeable, but also efficient mentors who provide empathetic support and novel teaching methods. In addition to child development and learning with teacher licensure, Maryville College’s Education programs include 18 teacher licensure tracks across grade levels.
  • Business: Globalization and the intricacies of modern business operations require effective communication and apt problem-solving strategies. Maryville College’s programs in finance/accounting, human resource management, international business, marketing and management keep future leaders adaptable as they grow alongside their industry.
  • Career Development: Few questions are going to be on students’ minds more often than some version of “What am I going to do after graduation?” Conveniently, schools awarded the Career Development badge have shown that they are well equipped to help their students graduate with confidence. Offering such resources as the Maryville College Career Center and Maryville College Works, Maryville College provides unparalleled support throughout every stage of career exploration, development, and application. Maryville College Works integrates career preparation for today’s job market with a time-tested, small-college liberal arts education. It is a step-by-step, developmental curriculum that channels the agility of liberal arts thinking towards specific career goals in order to maximize graduates’ abilities to find fulfilling vocations.

“Student success is a given at Maryville College,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “All of its programs are backed with broad perspectives across the liberal arts. Every student is pushed to be inquisitive and active. And with such extensive experiential learning opportunities, it’s no wonder why Maryville College’s graduates feel expertly prepared by their professional education.”
