Clinic Care
Student Health Services is an on-campus health facility that helps to achieve the students’ optimum wellness through wellness promotion, illness and injury management, and healthy lifestyle choices.
The Clinic is located in Fayerweather Hall, Rm 226B, and is staffed by a registered nurse, four hours each day: Monday 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM and Tuesday through Thursday, 12Noon - 4:00 PM. (The clinic is closed on Fridays.)
There is no additional charge to students for basic medical services provided through the clinic. Students may incur additional cost for prescription drugs or diagnostic tests such as laboratory, x-rays, cultures, etc.
The services available in the clinic include:
- Treatment by the nurse of minor illnesses and injuries
- Referrals off campus for more serious conditions.
- Over-the-counter medications and first aid supplies
- Information on personal health improvement, diet and nutrition
Medical excuses are not provided by the clinic for absences from class. If a professor calls to inquire, the nurse will provide only the date and time of a student’s visit to the clinic. The reason for the visit will not be provided, nor will a note be given to the student to take to the professor. Absence from class is a matter to be discussed between the professor and the student.

Emergency Medical Care
If you have an illness or injury that requires emergency care, Blount Memorial Hospital is located nearby. The hospital is directly across Highway 321 from the main entrance to the College. If you go to the emergency room, you will have to pay for the visit or file with your insurance. Call 865.981.8112 (Security) or 865.981.8002 (Staff Member on Duty) for assistance.
Immunization Requirements
Under Tennessee state law, newly enrolled students in a Tennessee institution of higher education who were born on or after January 1, 1957 are required to be vaccinated against Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR 2 doses). Newly enrolled students born on or after January 1, 1980 are required to be vaccinated against Chickenpox (Varicella 2 doses). We also recommend students who will be living on campus receive the Meningitis and Hepatitis B vaccinations. Students may seek a waiver from these laws for medical or religious reasons. All proof of immunity or medical waiver, must be signed by a health care professional. New students who do not complete this requirement may be prevented from attending classes. Students needing additional immunizations should contact their primary care physician, a local health clinic or their local health department. See below for more information on each vaccination.

Communicable Illnesses
The College will respond to cases of communicable illness on an individual basis in close consultation with an advising physician. Maryville College will not exclude persons with contagious illnesses from initial enrollment or access to College facilities or services unless a medically-based judgment by the consulting physicians and the College Medical Advisory Team establishes that exclusion or restriction is necessary to the welfare of the individual or other members of the College community. Any individual made aware of a communicable illness on campus is to consult with the Associate Dean of Students regarding College procedures and proper health care.
