Better Experience. Greater Purpose.

Community Engagement is at the heart of the Maryville College experience, serving as a platform for students to apply their learning through meaningful partnerships that foster mutual growth. Whether engaging through service, civic action, or coursework, students connect deeply with local, national, and global communities to develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. In alignment with the College’s Statement of Purpose, the Center equips students with a vital perspective of civic engagement, community partnership, social responsibility, and many other life skills that will remain valuable after leaving Maryville College.

Through structured programs like the Community Engaged Scholars and Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, we foster opportunities for students to engage with our communities in ways that are academically relevant and socially impactful. As a recipient of the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, we aim to develop partnerships that are not just acts of service, but catalysts for sustainable change and shared growth.

The CCE lives out ‘Doing Good on the Largest Possible Scale,’ creating opportunities for students to address real-world challenges, from local neighborhood projects to global initiatives, and empowering them to leave a lasting, positive impact wherever they go.

Whether through volunteer service, academic courses, internships, or research opportunities, we support students in finding meaningful ways to engage with communities. Contact us to discover how you can turn your passion into action through our diverse array of programs.

Nonprofit Leadership Alliance

In partnership with the national Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, Maryville College’s NLA Student Organization works to provide opportunities to practice strong business and leadership skills in order to be a catalyst of change. The organization connects current Scots with networking and internship opportunities within the nonprofit sector, and supports students seeking the Certificate for Nonprofit Professionals. Maryville College is one of 37 schools nationwide that offers the Certificate, and and one of only two in Tennessee.

Community Partners

Maryville College has a long-standing tradition of involvement in the larger community through service projects, conservation, preservation and programs to improve the lives of those around us.  Some students serve with nonprofits as part of scholarship programs, some serve in conjunction with classroom study, and some serve through individual motivation or through student clubs.

The college community strives to engage our local community in ways that will create lasting and positive impacts. Our goal is to work with local organizations to create partnerships that are mutually beneficial and sustainable. If your organization has a need for which the college community might be of help, please contact the office of Community Engagement!
