Assistant Professor of Sociology

Dr. Annie McGhee received her MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati (UC). She also holds graduate certificates in Women, Gender, and Sexualities Studies and Film & Media Studies from UC. Her broad research interests include race and ethnicity, sex and gender, and cultural and media studies. She’s particularly interested in the relationship between media and identities. Her dissertation, “White Eyes on Black and Brown Bodies: Mediated Intergroup Contact Theory and White Identity,” examines how white people learn about race – others’ and their own – from depictions of people of color in the media. Her other projects examine how cinema racializes fashion trends and how gender influences patients’ perceptions of chronic illness. Additionally, she has taught several undergraduate courses including Media & Society, Sociology of Gender, Contemporary Social Problems, Social Inequality, and Introduction to Sociology.
