A Tennessee native, Dr. Bill Swann has taught at Maryville College since 1999. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz, a Master of Music in Jazz Studies, and a Doctor of Arts degree in Music Theory Pedagogy. At Maryville College he teaches courses in jazz piano, improvisation, music theory, ear training, and ethics. With a passion for nurturing creativity and musicianship, his teaching emphasizes the integration of technical skill, stylistic understanding, and artistic expression.

Dr. Swann is an accomplished jazz pianist and arranger whose career spans performance, composition, and music pedagogy. As the pianist of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, he has shared the stage with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the industry, bringing his dynamic playing style to festivals, concerts, and recordings. In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Bill is committed to fostering a love for music in students of all ages. He directs the Maryville College Jazz Band, where he works closely with student musicians to bring dynamic jazz performances to the campus. He also serves as Chair of the Maryville College Curriculum, collaborating with faculty and administration to enhance academic offerings and align them with the college’s mission. When not teaching or performing, Bill enjoys composing original music and exploring new directions in jazz improvisation and recording.
